The TV Shows That Every Twenty-Something Should Be Watching

I am a very opinionated person when it comes to television series', but I love a lot of them. However, I have an amazing stamp of approval, so you should absolutely choose one of these shows to be your next to watch. They are all binge watch worthy and I know you'll love them. PS: Not too many spoilers, proceed with caution.

1. Parks and Recreation

This show is my favorite show of all time. Leslie Knope. Where to start? She is everything you want in a main character and everything you want to be in life. She is relatable and goal driven. She also has one of the greatest love stories in television history. The way she first meets Ben Wyatt is everything you can ask for in a relationship, hating their guts at first. Ben Wyatt is well rounded character, he is so goofy and awkward, he shows you it is okay to be that way. April Ludgate is the weirdest character ever, she has a crazy personality and has odd interests. However, she develops into one of my favorite characters in the whole show after she falls in love. Andy Dwyer is single handedly the goofiest character in any television show ever, you love him so much for it, and everything he says is absolute gold. Lastly, my favorite person in the whole show, Ron Swanson. Ron is a very opinionated and spirited person. I am not going to tell you anymore, he is amazing, watch the show and find out. BEWARE: The entire last season will make you cry, you get so attached and realizing it is ending is the worst thing in the world.

2. The Office

Yes, it is so awkward at times that it makes your body hurt, but it is so worth it. I love Pam and Jim’s love story, one that starts as a friendship and evolves into more. Dwight with all his crazy rules and his secret loving inside. And my favorite part of the show, Michael Scott. He may not have been around for the whole show, but he definitely makes his mark. BEWARE: The last episode will make you cry uncontrollably.

3. The Walking Dead

What can I even say? You love zombies? Watch this. You love well developed characters? Watch this. You love Norman Reedus? Watch this. Lauren Cohen? You know what to do. I don’t even need to describe it, it is a kick ass show and sticks to the comics really well. ADVICE: If you are actually going to watch a show, watch this because the new season is going to be insane. So catch up.

4. How I Met Your Mother

HIMYM is an amazing show. I actually just finished it. I don’t even know what to say it was so good. The story line is so well written, it is so relatable, it makes you laugh, it makes you cry. They show both sides of people’s lives, not just the good but the bad, and they capture it better than anything I have seen before. From the blue French horn, to Puzzles, to Robin Sparkles. You will love this show.

5. Supernatural

Pretty self-explanatory. This show is about everything supernatural. From vampires and werewolves, to angels and demons. You become very friendly with the devil, Crowley, and the fallen angel, Lucifer. If you watch up to the most recent season, you meet God. Let’s be honest, I started watching this for one reason with my best friend. He told it me it was full of hot people, and he wasn’t kidding. Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) is the hottest person in the entire world. Note: If someone reading this can help me meet him, DO IT.

6. Gossip Girl

This is for the girls of the world, or guys that love drama. I watched this with my roommate and I hate to admit it, I loved it. Mainly, for two reasons, Blake Lively and Ed Westwick. They play their characters so well and they are both so unbelievably beautiful that I could manage the drama. As it turns out though, this is actually a really good show, so I have to recommend it.

7. Friends

I think everyone is in agreement that this is the most watched television show in the history of television. Everyone loves it that watches it. I am adding it to my list for one reason though, I hadn’t watched it all the way through until last year. So for all those people that haven’t sat down and watched them all, do it because you won’t regret it.

8. Brickleberry

This is definitely rated R: not kid friendly. Yes. It is an adult cartoon, not that uncommon anymore. So be smart and don’t watch it around anyone little. This show is about a group of people working at Brickleberry National Park, a fictional story of course. Their jokes are hilarious and none of the episodes are connected, so you don’t have to watch them in order. The best part, the voice of the bear is Daniel Tosh. So give this show a chance, the first 30 seconds are the worst part of the entire series, so if you can make it past that then you will love it.

9. Workaholics

For anyone who hasn’t seen it. WATCH IT. It is the funniest thing ever. I have loved every single episode. Adam, Anders, and Blake are the three funniest dudes in the entire world. This show is about their work lives, them living the young adult life, and not caring about what others think. If you are sensitive to drugs and drinking, don’t watch this show. Instead, go watch Friends.

10. Game of Thrones

I will admit I am not finished yet, but I am adding it to my list. It is already so mind blowing that I have to. The characters are so well thought out and the plot is phenomenal. I will say, don’t get attached to characters, like at all, they will die, I promise.

11. Bob's Burgers

I LOVE BOBS. Every time I finish it, I just restart it. I love Bob, because he is also Archer. I love this show because of everything. But my favorite part is definitely the kids. Gene is the weirdest little child in the whole world, but he plays the keyboard with such passion. Louis is the mentally insane, but lovable child of the family. And Tina is the boy loving younger sister. Together they are just a mess, but Bob and Linda’s hilarious mess.

12. Orange is the New Black

Based on a true story, this is a hard hitting and very eye opening show. After watching this show you understand that our prison system in the United States is an absolute joke. This Netflix original show is Piper Kerman’s story. It’s the story of her being sent to an all woman’s prison and her experiences there. You absolutely fall in love with every character. Except the guards. You hate the guards. You get super attached to the characters and what happens to them. So if you are like me and get emotional when people get wronged, then have Kleenex. WARNING: Season Four ending is heart-wrenching, but it is filled with so much meaning and significance. It really emphasizes just how bad law enforcement can treat people and get away with it.

13. Law and Order: Special Victims Unit

We all know that original Law and Order was absolute garbage. (Just kidding it was good, compared to SVU, garbage.) SVU talks about a lot of current issues that our going on in the world, some episodes are even fact based. There aren’t very many core characters, but the main characters are so well developed and strong, they don’t need anymore. Watching this show makes you hope our justice system works as hard as they do, to get the justice people deserve. The show also shows you all the sacrifices law enforcement and their families make every day to keep us safe.

14. American Horror Story

In order to watch this, which I mean it is self-explanatory, you have to like scary stuff. With this in mind, if you do, this is the show to watch. It is so sick and twisted you never know what to expect. Every season is independent and is its own fear, but they all have phenomenal acting and plots. I appreciate that even though the seasons aren’t connected, they still bring back a majority of the cast every season. Also, Evan Peters is gorgeous, so it is nice getting to stare at him.

15. The Twilight Zone

This show is stimulating and shocking. It is original and like nothing else. In the older ones, which are way better, they incorporate the current famous actors in their episodes. It is one of the best science fiction shows to date. Every episode is well thought out and has an amazing plot. Each episode has a twist and was written so well that, for the most part, you couldn’t guess the ending. I love this show because growing up my dad and I would watch the marathon every New Years! They recently put it on Netflix, so give it a chance, because it is the best.

16. Parenthood

Goodness. Can I say family goals? It makes you wish that you could live that close and be that involved with your family. From your grandparents to your children, everyone being in arms reach. They have hard issues that every family faces and handle it with such grace, showing you how you wish you could handle it. It shows how a family dynamic should be and what you should strive for. Also, how parents make sacrifices for their children and how kids will eventually appreciate it. It shows you family hardships and how to make it through it and fight for what you love. I love this show because you fall in love with this family and become so connected with them. The last season really hit close to home because I lost my grandma at the same time as watching this. So there was lots of crying. Definitely watch it though, amazing show.

17. Modern Family

This is another show that is the definition of family goals. However, while Parenthood is more of a serious based family dynamic show, this is a comedy. This show explains that it is okay to make those stupid, silly mistakes and it is okay to laugh at it. Don’t take your life to seriously. And don’t we all wish that we could have Gloria as a grandma? My favorite part of this show though is Phil Dunphy, he is the television version of my dad, and it is hilarious.

18. Archer

BOB. I love H. Jon Benjamin’s voice. Archer is the story of secret agents and their hilarious life. I absolutely love this show, it is very vulgar and inappropriate for children. I love Lana and Archer’s extremely dysfunctional relationship. They are so terrible with each other, but still care about each other so much. I also feel like if I had to pick a spirit animal from this show it would definitely be Pam, she is the funniest thing ever.

19. Grey's Anatomy

This show is full of drama and sex, so get ready. However, it is still very well written. They show a lot more than other medical shows, like a lot of what is happening in the operating rooms, so that appeals to me. Another thing I like is the love stories in this show, even though a lot of them are filled with drama, I enjoy them. Derek and Meredith are one of the sweetest couples ever. This show will make you laugh, and cry, and sometimes make you wonder what you are doing with your life. But what good show doesn’t?

20. Blue Mountain State

This show is definitely rated R. There is no possibility of anything else. However, this show is hilarious and relatable. I don’t know what could be more relatable then young adults in college struggling with everyday life. Yes, there is a lot of sex, drugs, and alcohol. That doesn’t make it any less of a good show. If you can appreciate something funny through all of that I would definitely recommend it. They also just put out a movie, watch that too. They are both hysterical. PS: Drug Olympics is the most commonly known episode.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
