Two days ago, I had the blessing of witnessing one of the most amazing stories ever: The Shack. The story was not always a movie however, it was once simply a book. A very very famous book that is. The story follows a man named Mack (short for Mackenzie) who took his three children camping. While two of the children, Josh and Emily were out canoeing, Emily accidentally tipped the boat. The boat crashed on top of Josh preventing him from coming up and getting air. As a normal parental figure, Mack jumped into the water to save them, leaving the third and youngest child, Missy unattended. During the commotion of getting Macks two children out of the water, Missy was kidnapped and murdered by someone who we never find out who it is, unfortunately. Then Mack receives a disturbing letter in the mail requesting him to go back to the horrible place that Missy was murdered- The Shack. There he meets God, The Holy Spirit, and Jesus.
To start the review off of this movie I do have to say, I f***ing loved this movie. I am sorry if this is not the appropriate time to swear but I can't help it, it was just that good. Never have I cried like actual tears and during this movie, I was, I really was. But to go along with this movie I have sooooooo many questions! For example, when Mack as a little boy told the priest that his father beat him, why did we not find out what happened to him? Did he get arrested? Did he not? Why did the friend Emil end up narrating the story in the end? Was it symbolic? Why was God a black woman? I am not saying that to be racist I am purely just curious, I would be saying the same thing if God was portrayed as white women, or male and so on!
I am Catholic, but now that I am older I have not practiced my faith as much as I should, and some of the things that God said during the movie really stuck with me in a good way! For example, how we need to be able to deceive how man perceives God versus what God really is. I really enjoyed this movie! Despite the fact that is was about religion and I think the fact that the book and the movie were both so popular says something amazing. The story shows struggle and taught forgiveness despite how hard it is.
Whatever you believe and whatever your religion is, you should watch this five star worthy movie.
