I've seen my share of ridiculousness since attending San Diego State University, and up until Thursday, Dec 8, I thought I wouldn't see anything that could surprise me. Then came a Facebook event called, "SDSU Lettuce Club".
The Lettuce Club is one of the latest viral trends that inspired schools, from high school to university levels, in hosting a competitive event where people are required to eat the head of a lettuce.
The SDSU version was created by Brendan Edwards and Austin Chang, and the event grew quite the following, with well over two thousand people being interested and even partaking in this event.
It wasn't surprising that people viewed this as a nice little gag to enjoy while finals and final projects are going on.
For the Founders of this "organization," there was a serious cause in mind when they created this. Their motivations were revealed by their "VP of Finance", Cameron Lyons in the following post:
Hey Everyone,
A Message from our Founders Brenden Edwards & Austin Chang: Our event is going to be in just a few short hours. While the event is going to be wild and a lot of fun, we wanted to use this event to bring awareness to a larger issue that fellow college students and our San Diego Community face, which is Food Insecurities. We want to raise money to donate to Urban Angels, that is a local nonprofit that provides food to the homeless in San Diego. If you're participating in this event or are feeling giving this finals & holiday season, donate towards our cause by venmoing $1-3 to our VP Finance @Cameron-Lyons-1 so that we can make a difference in our community while finding out who our next president of lettuce club is!

Lettuce Club is an interesting take on originally meme-like event now supporting legitimate causes in the community
