Located at 100 Gansevoort Street in New York City's meatpacking district, right across from the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Ice Cream is this summer's biggest attraction. Selling out 30,000 tickets within just five days, this highly anticipated, pop-up museum contains rooms filled with ice cream related art and a snack in every room.
Upon entering, the museum's lively, energetic staff greets you with a rundown about the museum. Then, guests are directed to a counter where they are given the first taste of what the museum had in store. The neon "Museum of Ice Cream" sign lit the area as guests are served ice cream from infamous places such as Black Tap and Oddfellows.
The next room was cone themed. The small room contained an array of cones hanging on a pink wall and another area had multiple upside down lamps that resembled ice cream cones hanging from the ceiling in front of a cone patterned wall. After entering the room, you are greeted by another employee handing out the treat for the room - edible balloons. Made in front of your eyes, these transparent sugar, helium filled balloons will turn your voice into something much like a chipmunk. After being given this sugary treat, the employees tell you to say your favorite ice cream flavor before attempting to eat the rest of the deflated, sticky, sugar.
Moving into the next room guests are greeted by yet another employee. This room contained a collaborative, ice cream sundae where each guest is asked to take a scoop of "ice cream" and add it to the sundae that was piling in the bowl attached to the wall.
Walking through a brown curtain, you move into the next themed room, the chocolate room. The dark, brown rooms smells just like chocolate. The room contains a big, brown bean bag chair sat in the middle of the floor, video stimulation of exploding chocolate and a chocolate fountain. And on the way out, be sure to grab one (or a few) dove chocolates before moving into the next room.
Next, guests move into the most famous, talked about, part of the museum - the sprinkle pool. The three foot pool is actually filled with rainbow beads, rather than sprinkles. Pink inflatable balls and red inflatable hearts float around the "pool," along with a set of stairs and a diving board. Even though this room lacked sprinkles and was a slight disappointment, it definitely was a different, unforgettable experience.
Lastly, guests move into the final room containing the taste test ice cream. After being given a "miracle berry" glycoprotein pill, guests are instructed to walk around and view ice cream inspired art, sit on the ice cream scooper seesaw and swing on the ice cream sandwich swing while the pill dissolves in your mouth. Staff hidden behind a white wall hand guests pink and blue swirled vanilla ice cream topped with a lemon slice. Seems strange to top ice cream with lemon right? But, the reaction from the pill will send your tastebuds on a taste trip as the sour lemon then becomes sweet.
This one of a kind museum is definitely a cool way to spend a summer day in New York City. The museum will be open from July 29th until August 31st. Purchase your tickets here.
