The Scoop on NYU Club Fest
Alee Bloom, 2015

On Thursday, September 3rd, NYU students scurried over to Coles Sports Center to discover what student activities were being offered this semester at the extraordinary event known as Club Fest. While many might see it as more of a trick or treating event, it's actually a great opportunity to meet people with similar interests and find out all the cool stuff that is going on in the NYU community. If you weren't able to make it this semester, fear not, because I picked out the most unique and interesting clubs I saw just to get your palate wet for next semester's Club Fest (no, I didn't just choose who was offering the best food, but if I had to choose it would be a tie between the Chinese Culture Club and the Turkish Student Association).

For many, Club Fest doubles as both a way to explore the various student groups, and as a two month early pregame for Halloween, as it does for Leor, a Gallatin Senior who has attended Club Fest since her freshman year.

Have you ever wanted to learn the art of Japanese sword fighting (Kendo)? There's a club for that. They also offered Oreos (bonus)!

It's possible the sword fighting might be too intense for you, but intramural running, tennis, or swimming is too boring. In that case, maybe you should check out NYU's Ultimate Frisbee Team.

They juggle AND have a unicycle??! If your dream has always been to run away to the circus, but you don't want to waste your NYU degree, then Circus Clubmay be the place for you!

The fact that this club's sole purpose is to ice cakes implies that there will probably be free food at every meeting, and that free food will probably be cake. You don't need to go to cake school (does that exist or is it heaven?) to learn how to ice a cake, let Icing on the Cake teach you.

Okay, perhaps I am a little food driven, but in my defense I hadn't eaten lunch yet. However, I don't need much defense because how cool is it that this club grows their own food?? I don't know how they do it, but I guess I'll have to find out by attending Community Agriculture's first meeting on Monday (09/14 at 7 p.m. inside Washington Square Village behind the Citibank) and hope they serve up more of that delicious banana bread!

With all the food clubs, here's one that does something really awesome! Two Birds, One Stone distributes leftover food from the Palladium and U Hall cafeterias to the NYC Rescue Mission down the street. The only problem is that they need YOUR help to carry all that food over there! Are you up for the task?

If you think you might need to work on your muscle density (and you're a girl), maybe you should join these lovely ladies for a workout and become one of the NYU Girl's Who Lift.

...and with all that new muscle you can join the Swing Dance Society and swing to your heart's content...

...or maybe you need to kick it up a notch and just join Rhymez, a freestyle club (I know I will if they can teach me how to jump that high)...

...but then again, maybe you should just stick with Ninja, where as the name implies, they play ninja the whole time.

Summer's over, but you can still be part of Hawaii Club.

Coffee-- the only thing that gets us to our 8 a.m. on time. Let's be real, though, college students drink this heavenly elixir religiously, so if free food sounds good, free coffee sounds better. That's exactly what Coffee Club offers, plus more-- everything from tastings, film screenings, and roastery tours! (not only that, their pamphlets and logo are winning the unofficial graphic design points.)

Tessa, a CAS senior, was really into Coffee Club (maybe she's just really into the free iced coffee they gave her).

Frank (left) was interested in Judo Club and Antonio (right) thought the Archery Club looked cool. Both are sophomores at CAS.

Maria, a junior in LS, is the head delegate in NYU'sModel UN Team (she also has a cute dog, but it's unconfirmed whether or not it's because she's part of Model UN, so you'll just have to join and find out for yourself).

What clubs are you in? What clubs do you want to be in after reading this article? I personally want to be in all of them, but I'd probably have to drop all of my classes.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
