Last night, after much anticipation, I finally went to watch La La Land. As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of film and magic, I loved that La La Land married the two in a romantic and eccentric balance. La La Land is about love and life. The entire film is nostalgic in the best way. It made me yearn for a love I’ve never had, sort of the way Adele songs makes me feel. La La Land is a myriad of artistry and dreams. This dream is of success, of love, and of rhythm. Although it is set in the present, it makes you feel as if you’re floating through time.
I loved everything about the film down to its bittersweet ending. (*spoiler alert*) The guy does not in fact get the girl in the end. I say bittersweet because while the hopeless romantic in me wanted them to make it work regardless of the girl’s husband and kid, I knew this alternatively realistic ending was much more substantial. La La Land grasps at reality for long enough to be painstakingly relatable but diverts back to its surreal aura enough to still be abstract.
The soundtrack is original and beautifully thoughtful. La La Land transformed me into a fan of jazz and the culture it brings with it. The soundtrack was something out of a dream and felt completely appropriate for a walk in the clouds or a dive in the stars. It was utterly lovely.
But ultimately, La La Land is a story about making the crazy, foolish dreams that everyone told you were ridiculous, a reality. Its about love that makes you feel good because its raw and imperfect. Its about watching the sunset and dancing to jazz until your feet hurt and you can’t dance anymore. Its about laughing and its about crying. Its about eating and its about sleeping. Its everything and its in everything as well.
La La Land makes you want to throw your phone away and find something tangible. The entire vibe was very old Hollywood. It made me realize why I am happy where I’m at and why I’m willing to wait for the marvels life has to offer me. Whether they be love, travel or an affluent career, I know they’re worth the wait because the result…will be magic.
