I have spent numerous years worrying about whether I have chosen the right career path. I've kept myself up at night wondering if I made the right decision between culinary arts and media communication. What if I chose media, only to realize upon graduation that I chose the wrong career? What if I find myself stuck in a field I hate because I made a decision my senior year of high school about which career path to take? Growing up, my dad always told my sister and I to "follow [our] dreams and everything will work out." The only problem is that I don't have a cut and dry "dream." I mean, I thought I did, but now I'm in my junior year of college and I have no idea what I want to do after I graduate. It hasn't been until recently that I've realized that it really doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if I've chosen the "right" career path because there really isn't one "right" career for anyone. I've realized that there are only two things that really matter after I've graduated:
1. Am I happy in the job I have?
2. Am I making a positive change in the world?
You see, it doesn't matter whether you're a doctor, vet, lawyer, novelist, actor, chef, entrepreneur, filmmaker, artist, etc. The only thing that matters is that you have a job you enjoy going to and that you are making a positive change in what you do. A positive change doesn't mean curing cancer or inventing the latest technology. A positive change can be as simple as making your workplace a better place because you treat everyone kindly or bring cookies for people every Monday. Life isn't about being in the "right" career path. It's about being where you are in the moment and filling the needs you see there.
So whether you want to travel the world or find the cure for Alzheimers, stop worrying about whether or not you are in the "right" place. I guarantee that no matter what career you've chosen, you will find the place you're supposed to be at the time you're supposed to be there.
