The Rewards of Being a Journalist

For journalists, it's never really about the money; it's about having the opportunity to share captivating stories every single day. Pursuing a career in the field means you will have to put in a lot of work and hours each week, but if you're lucky, you will also have a fulfilling career full of adventure and great stories.

You get to share stories that otherwise wouldn't be heard

Perhaps my most favorite aspect of being a journalist is being able to amplify the voices of those that are otherwise muffled; bringing attention to important issues that affect people in a community can make such a powerful impact.

You are always "on the scene"

"Hey Caroline, did you go to the MAGIC! The concert last night?"

"Oh yeah, I was interviewing the band!"

Whether it's a popular concert or a breaking news story, you are always in the right place, at the right time.

You always have great stories to tell

Some of the most interesting people I met happen to be journalists; they have such fascinating stories of the places they have been and the people they've met.

You create connections with interesting people

As a journalist, you get to talk to a variety of people, many of whom have eclectic backgrounds and unique voices. And if you're lucky, you might even create a few friendships along the way!

You are constantly improving your communication skills

Whether you are interviewing complete strangers or working in Public Relations, being a journalist requires you to be a "people person," which becomes especially helpful in your everyday interactions with others.

You become knowledgeable in certain fields, depending on your beat

From Arts & Entertainment to Politics, you soon become an expert in the field you are reporting on, if you weren't already.

If you're lucky, you can travel the world

Travel truly is the only thing that makes you richer.

You develop great writing skills

Some of the best writers are journalists.

You get to work with other creative and talented people

Most people that opt-out of desk jobs are out-of-the-box thinkers, and journalists are no exception; if working with passionate, unconventional thinkers is up your ally, you might want to consider journalism as a career.

The field of journalism attracts a variety of people, many of whom are passionate about storytelling and strive to make a difference in their community. Being a journalist is hard work, but many would argue the rewards outweigh the costs.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
