How the Medical Drama "The Resident" is Tackling Modern Issues

As we progress in this modern society, the ways that we deal with our modern problems have also evolved. I have been watching the show "The Resident" for a while now and I noticed something interesting with the last two episodes I just saw.

There is an African American couple who comes into labor and delivery and the wife is sent to surgery. She comes out of surgery with extreme pain but is not attended to by the nurse who claims that the pain is normal and that the nurses are too busy. Meanwhile, other nurses are helping less severe and notably white patients, when Dr. Pravesh (an Indian ER doctor) realizes that this woman is in need of extreme medical attention. He is finally able to get a hold of the OB/GYN doctor to help the woman, who is found to have internal bleeding and gets sent back to surgery. Unfortunately, the surgeons are not able to save the woman and Dr.Pravesh makes it quite clear that she died as a result of racism. The African American woman did not receive the help she needed and deserved. At the end of the episode, the viewers are informed that the episode was based on a real story. The show did a great job portraying the maternal mortality issue that exists in society today.

The episode that followed explored the issue of blood banks and the short supply. The episode explores the struggles that a hospital must go through when there is a shortage of blood supply. Elective surgeries get postponed and critical patients are not able to receive treatment without the proper resources. Once again the end of the episode displays a message that states that only every 3 out of 100 Americans donate blood, but someone needs blood every 2 seconds.

I was very moved by both of these episodes, more than any other episode of any other show I have seen. It's interesting to see how the film and television industries are using their platforms to talk about issues that are prevalent in society. It is similar to many other recent shows and movies that aim to bring light to issues as well. For example, the "Black Mirror" series reflects the impacts of technology in the modern era in a futuristic manner. I can not wait to see what else this era of television and film brings and the issues they will tackle.

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."

I was sitting at my cubicle, now that I am an adult, looking at the rain pouring down on the windowsill, bumming on life, wishing for the rain to just stop for a full day.

There are moments where we count down the hours until work is over and how many more days till the weekend, and this many weeks until something exciting. Or something like that? Well, I was bumming because my next day off from work is not until Memorial Day weekend, which is not until the end of May. And since this is my first year out of college being a “real person,” I am totally missing the winter, spring and summer breaks. I am sure all of us have felt this way even if just for a hot minute…
