The Representation Crisis

One of the greatest acts of love is trying to understand and recognize the truths of an individual with a different perspective.

I was scrolling through my twitter timeline earlier, looking for inspiration for my next article. I came across a quote that I found very interesting: "Until the lion learns how to write, every story will glorify the hunter." -African Proverb. Basically, the line points out how only certain perspectives are addressed and only some voices are heard, while others are not. While a village may see the hunter as a hero, the animals may see the hunter as a killer.

This quote brilliantly aligns with the lack of representation some citizens encounter in the media and in politics. Not as many women and people of color are part of the decision making going on in Washington, so many stories are not being told. Many perspectives are not being shared with the public. Although astounding leaps forward have been made in the world of sexism and racial inequality, we still have a long way to go before there is proper and equal representation.

Similarly, only the privileged and educated group of people have their voices heard, more often than not. I suppose this is to be expected. Being able to read and write are amazing feats that some people can only dream about. With education, comes the ability to communicate and express yourself through different outlets. Therefore, the poor and uneducated bunch are, once again, left behind.

I am no expert in politics, government or the education system, but I can only make a simple suggestion based on what I do know and how I feel. Use your gifts to tell your story. If you like writing, write. If you like art, make art. If you love to sing, sing LOUD. Do not take for granted the privilege of self expression. The sad truth is, we were all born with the right to self express, but not everyone is allowed to utilize that right. That is what makes it a privilege.

And finally, use your voice and talents to help tell the stories of those who are unable to by themselves. It may not be coming from them, but coming through a kind soul is the next best thing. Make sure you have their permission, and that you are telling it from their authentic perspective. You may be the only one to care enough to write down their story, so do not take the task lightly. Or, even better, make strides to teach people how to self express on their own. The ultimate mission would be for everyone to be able to themselves. Either way, stepping outside of yourself to listen and engage with a person with a different view, can make your outlook on the world even more realistic and clear.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
