The Recruiting Process

The recruiting process through my eyes.

The Recruiting Process
Brent Schlotfeldt

So many high school student athletes want to move on and play their respected sport at the collegiate level. If they are like me they want to play D-1 college football. Not all who want to play college football will. Part of the people who want to play give up on the dream, because of the difficult process it takes to get there. The recruiting process is long, difficult, and takes perseverance. The recruiting process also needs an "I don't care attitude". The process begins at different times for each person.

For me, the process began between 8th grade and Freshman year of high school at football camps. Football camps have been a way between each football season for myself to show my ability in person to coaches that I hoped to possibly play for in the future. Prior to and after camps it was important to be in contact with coaches. With camps, emails, calls, and twitter to stay in contact with coaches I also had to set up visits to talk to coaches in person and to get to know the football program that you are thinking about joining.

On some visits it is clear you need a "don't care attitude" because on visits you can see and hear things that can make you question everything. You need to say to yourself that you don't care because you know that you will end up where you are supposed to be. You also can't give up in the times that are hard when a school tells you that they don't want you. You need to stay strong and remember there is a place for you.

The process for me has been difficult and long like the process for many others. I know in the end there is a place for me, but as of right now the process is still going. Many people that are close to me have believed in me for the last 4 years when the process started for me, and they haven't given up. I love them all and I will end the recruiting process where they think I should end up while ending where I know there is a place for me.

Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
