The Reason I Started Writing
Eileen Kerrigan

This year I am so grateful that I have become a writer because it has helped me grow, learn about myself, and made me be open to a lot of things in my life. I wanted to write because I have always believed in making a difference in this world. There are so many things in this modern world society that people may not be happy and I may feel the same way but since this world is not perfect there is always writing.

In order to become a writer, you have to put yourself out there and be confident to share your ideas even if you are starting to be one! Writing is a part of my life and de-stresses me. It makes me feel relaxed, open-minded, happy and makes me feel appreciated as well. When I started my writing career in school and to write articles, it was challenging for me in the beginning because I didn't know if my thoughts/ideas were strong enough.

The solution to the challenges I faced as a beginner writer for college assignments and for articles is going to my professor's office hours and to take step by step each day. I did not expect to become a writer, but through this journey, I have loved it. To write means more than putting pretty words on a page; the act of writing is to share a part of your soul with the world. My favorite quote of writing is, "no one can tell your story to tell it yourself. No one can write your story so write it yourself" (Anonymous).

The life of being a writer has its challenges but also has an enjoyment a lot of people like. I feel that there is always something going on in this modern world society and I think it is good to talk about it as well with writing about it. Another reason why I like being a writer is my voice gets heard without any interruptions and distractions. I absolutely love having my voice heard because it makes me feel so appreciated and I have received so many compliments about my writing.

I joined the University of Arizona Odyssey Community to gain more experience and spread the endless possibilities of creativity. It's a way of talking without being interrupted. An example of why people like being a writer too is a woman named Laura Salkin said, "The one thing I love most about writing is getting in the zone" (Huffington Post). You will need the writing skills for so many important things in your life, for example, getting a college degree/grad school, creating your resume/ cover letter, and speaking to companies for future jobs.

If you are ever feeling stressed or want to become a writer, take a pen or pencil with a piece of paper and start writing to share your ideas with the world. We absolutely need more people to make a difference in this world to make the world an even better world even though everything that is surrounded by us is not perfect. I took the opportunity to become a writer to make a difference in this world, now I recommend you to take a chance too!

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
