I'm almost positive every single person was asked this question as a child: "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
For me personally, I never had an actual answer. My mind was scattered all over the place and I never had a set plan for my career. It wasn't until a couple years ago, my mother sat down with me and talked to me about my future and what I wanted to do with my life. She told me, "You better do whatever makes you happy and pays well." I thought about it for a while. I did some research on my computer looking up different job titles and the yearly salaries and I finally came to a conclusion.
I was highly interested in Psychology. For those who aren't familiar with the topic, Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions.
Once I had chosen my college, Centenary University, I declared my major to be Psychology. On the first day of class, my Psychology professor asked...
"Why did you choose Psychology for your major?"
That is a good question I thought to myself. It took me a couple seconds to process my thoughts but I told him the real reason why I wanted to be a Psych major.
I want to be a Psych major because I want to learn more about the topic and why people do the things they do. I want to be able to help people.
There is no better feeling than giving a helping hand and simply turning someone's life around. People struggle each and every day about many different things. The way I see it, humans shouldn't have to struggle in a way that puts themselves in danger; let alone struggling by itself. I want a job that I could be able to make a difference in the world. I want to be able to say that I changed someone's life. Someone who thinks their life could never be normal again, someone who thinks there's no turning back, someone who thinks "What's the point? Why am I here? What am I doing with myself?" Helping someone recover from something so deep and challenging is priceless. Happiness is priceless.
I want to give those people a new beginning, a fresh start, another chance.
