When new freshman think of Greek life, they think of big houses filled with hundreds of brothers and sisters. That is not the case at small colleges and universities, it's actually better. Greek life on small campuses are a family and the unity between each organization is real and present.
1. We don't have big houses. We have chapter rooms instead.
A lot of big schools allow organizations to have houses, but at small schools we have our "house" in a chapter room. Chapter rooms are located in the dorm buildings, sometimes with members living in them. I am currently living in my organization's chapter room and love it!
2. Dues are way cheaper.
Small school dues are roughly around $200 to $400 a semester while bigger school's dues can be up to $1000. Crazy, right? Sure, living in a mansion sounds amazing but in the end, you save so much money. Your bank account will thank you.
3. You become close with members of other fraternity's and sororities.
I am not stating that at bigger schools organizations do not know each other and what not, but personally I know people from each social Greek organization. Some of my friends are not in the same fraternity or sorority that I am in, yet we have formed friendships. Greek unity!
4. Recruitment is different.
Big schools organizations have recruitment at each house. At a small university, recruitment may be in one academic building with interested new members going from room to room rather than house to house. It is a more casual, laid back environment that is less stressful.
5. New member classes are small.
My new member class was only made up of three. The bond we have made throughout the weeks of our process is priceless and made us stronger. The semester I joined is no doubt one of the best semesters I've had.
6. You have a better chance of holding a position.
Greek organizations have executive boards and a list of positions underneath them. At a small school, you have the opportunity to hold positions that will help you in life after graduation.
7. You are close with all of your organization's members.
Instead of having 150 sisters, you may have 25-45. Yes, that is small, but I know everything about each of my sisters. The bond between each of us is present in everything that we do. We are literally a family.
At a big school I never would of went through recruitment and joined Greek life, but at my small university, I am so happy that I did. We don't have big houses and hundreds of members, but the bond between everyone makes up for it.
