The Real RHS

We are not all crazy rednecks!

The Real RHS

There was an article written about a week ago and it seemed almost completely inaccurate. There are a few things that you should really know about Robertsdale High School. You need to know the real RHS. This is the inside scoop.

1. We do not think our cousins are hot.

Just because we are from the South does not mean we date our cousins. We are not a town full of trashy people who do not have any class. I can't think of a person I graduated with who actually thinks that their cousin was hot. That is backwards and we have more respect and class than that.

2. We have a sense of community.

We as a community come together during hard times and during great times.

1. Our entire baseball team shaved their heads for a fellow player's mother who was fighting cancer. If that doesn't show our character then I do not know what will.

2. We collect canned goods, as well as clothing and hygiene essentials, for families in need. We love helping others!

3. Jacked-up trucks.

Boys will be boys and jack their trucks up, but that's everywhere in the South. It's normal in Alabama to see a jacked-up truck. It doesn't mean you are just from Robertsdale. It's a boy thing. No, it's not always bad looking either. Some of the things the boys do to their trucks makes them look nicer. Especially when they clean them up and make them shiny!

4. Dead deer and other animals are not a normal game we play.

That was one time and from my understanding, it was a joke played on friends. Come on, it was kinda funny but then again, it was not because of a breakup...

5. Guns.

It is normal to see people execute the right to bear arms. We are from South Alabama, and people down here like to hunt ... that doesn't mean you are specifically from Robertsdale High School. Just saying.

6. Everyone has a life.

Yes, people we graduated with are married, pregnant, or already have a baby. It's called growing up and making a life for yourself. There are plenty of other schools that are the same way.

7. Do boys and girls really trade shoes?

I mean, do they really?

5. Teachers that care.

There have been plenty of times where many students were struggling in class and the teachers or other classmates were there to help them. I can think of numerous times where the teacher had helped me out. Teachers were funny as well. While we were still there, we could joke around with them.

6. Lockdowns were not a weekly thing.

We may have had maybe one lockdown and that was because some stupid idiot tried to rob a bank downtown. We are obviously a-okay and alive.

7. You could count on our school spirit.

No, our football team is not the best in the county, and honestly, winning doesn't matter, but that doesn't stop us from cheering on and encouraging one another. Wherever the football team goes, they have a support team right behind them: the band, cheerleaders, fellow classmates, parents, people from the community, and faithful alumna. We also have other sports besides football, such as softball, track, cross country, baseball, swim team, tennis, golf, and basketball. We also have a great band and a ROTC program. During pep rallies, we come together as classes and then as a whole school to cheer on our teams. It's not just about winning.

8. The best group you've ever known.

You may not be friends with your entire class but you will have that one best friend, or, in my case, friends. I still talk to my two best friends I've known since middle school. Most of us have gone to school together since elementary school. You are guaranteed to find at least one best friend.

So all in all, Robertsdale was a great community to grow up in and go to school in. Thank you to all who helped us achieve our goals! Thank you C/O 2014 for supporting one another! Finally, thank you Robertsdale High School for giving us a place to call home for four years! We will never forget it.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
