If you aren't familiar with the purge it's an on-going 3 sequel movie. It is based on a radical version of what America could become if the government lets people kill and destroy to rid themselves of sin, anger, or to flat out "control population". Fast forward to what is actually happening today.
A story line of what happened in Wisconsin this past Saturday:
Police pull a citizen over in Milwaukee. The citizen is armed with a firearm. He is told to put his weapon down and he attempts to flee officer. Officer shoots two rounds and the citizen dies. Later that Saturday other citizens riot burning down several businesses.
Second story line:
A neighborhood watch man shoots and kills an attendee to a party 3 blocks from his home after they leave the party.
Third story line:
A man is pulled over for a broken taillight, he is shot and killed in front of his child and significant other by the police officer.
In each story line someone of color is involved and the story has happened within the last 3 months. The media can show us what they want, not what is always the facts. In the first instance, both people involved were of color. The citizen fled the officer and apparently had a record. Things may have been misinterpreted and the media displayed another shooting where an officer kills someone of color. This may or may not have been the cause of a riot that burned several business in what seems to be the part of town that felt the most affected by the shooting. Fact is another person of color was injured in the riot. Several police have been injured but have also made many arrests. Because of this weekend's events it has been brought to social media's attention that segregation and racism in Milwaukee is real and citizens are tired of it.
If you google the name Trayvon Martin you will find a picture of smiling 17-year-old-boy. Underneath you would find his biography and realize he was shot and killed at only seventeen. A neighborhood watchman who took matters into his own hands was responsible. Trayvon was set to head home since he was near the area. The neighbor hood watchman said Trayvon was "suspicious looking" and followed him. Even though he shot and killed an innocent victim he was found not guilty for murder. This was in 2012, fast forward to last week and the same thing happened. From Florida to North Carolina. A neighborhood watchman fatally injured a African American from his own home. He was found guilty. Kouren-Rodney Bernard Thomas was simply a party goer who was celebrating finally moving out of his parents at 20 years old. His GoFund Me for his funeral expense is still open for donations. Our home isn't far from all of this. Suburban Saint Paul, July 6th, 2016. 32-year-old black male Philando Castile was shot and killed after trying to explain to police that he had a license to carry and was reaching for his I.D. He was shot 6 times all while his girlfriend and daughter watched. His homicide is still under investigation. The officers were way out of line and did not offer medical help. While this case could be compared to what happened in Milwaukee it is far from it. He simply had a broken taillight and was, in the end, killed for it.
The media fights the facts sometimes. After reading several articles I found more and more differences in this case than in ones out in previous light. The differences don't stop the other cases from being true. Individuals with ideas are the ones that change the world. Lives matter. Instead of feeding into media we should keep fighting for equality, for peaceful protests, for justice. Doing things the right way instead of taking lives into our own hands because then we just become like the people we say we hate. This year so many lives have been lost because of violence, because of police, because of brothers, because of being somewhere at the wrong place at the wrong time. Being the generation that changes things for years to come is up to us. Educating adults and people younger than us by letting them know that just because you close your eyes doesn't mean it doesn't happen, is the first step of many. Racism is real and it has the power to take lives. As humans we also have the power to save them.
