The Real Jersey Shore

What the true Jersey Shore is really like.

The Real Jersey Shore
New Jersey 101.5

I am writing this article as I am sitting in the backseat of a car traveling towards the Jersey Shore — the real Jersey Shore. This shore is far different than the one represented on television, one which highlights drama and conflict that is not at all indicative of the State of New Jersey. Indeed, "Jersey Shore" portrayed New Jersey in a poor light to both domestically and internationally. Perceptions, especially first impressions, matter. Those unfamiliar with residents of the state of New Jersey would not have any evidence to refute such stereotypes. Thus, they take it as the truth.

The real Jersey Shore is far more representative of the realities in the state of New Jersey, contrary to the popular television show. At the real Jersey Shore, people come from around the state and the region to experience the slower and more relaxed pace of life, if only for a while. They seek to enjoy the beaches, the boardwalks, the zoos and much more.

Many individuals across this country do not have access to the coast, so this not only allows people a temporary escape from their day to day lives but also helps to benefit the economy of this state which has strong foundations in the tourism market. Employment at the true Jersey Shore has allowed individuals to achieve their dreams, including saving to pay ones college tuition. Without such employment, individuals may not have been able to achieve their highest aspirations.

Moreover, state and local governments benefit from economic activity at the true Jersey Shore due to its ability to increase tax revenue that is desperately needed to fund necessary programs. This not only benefits private business owners, but it benefits the public as well. Additionally, at the true Jersey Shore, foreigners are hired to work for the summer at various shore establishments. This helps to promote cross-cultural learning. The foreign workers are exposed to American social customs and culture, and Americans employed at such establishments and their patrons are exposed to individuals with different experiences and backgrounds. Interactions such as these help to promote understanding and undermine stereotypes. The true Jersey Shore has allowed people to discover their passion and find life partners, foundations which forever alter the lives of the effected individuals and indeed society as a whole.

So, as I visit the true Jersey Shore today, I cannot help but reflect on how it has affected my life. As I have grown up there I have had a rich variety of experiences. As I have grown older, I have taken long nature walks on the beach soaking in the different natural wonders. Additionally, I have had the pleasure of reading various types of pieces on the beach, adding to the diverse range of pieces that I have read. I have immensely benefited from the true Jersey Shore. May it continue to have a positive impact going into the future for myself and others.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
