For college students or people looking for a new career, job hunting can be a daunting experience. Browsing the web for that dream job is quite fun, but there is one thing standing between you and that paycheck: the interview.

Interviewing is a learned skill, and there are no second chances to make a great first impression. Normally, first impressions determine whether someone is offered a job. People tend to think job interviews are extremely difficult, but they are quite easy if you understand the most important tips. With that, here are the five things you must do in the art of interviewing.

1. Do your research!

Lack of preparation is one of the main reasons people are not successful at interviews. Research the company and the job you are applying for, and most importantly, make sure you know yourself and what you want.

2. Make a good first impression.

"The smelly smell that smells smelly." An interview starts as soon as you walk into the door. Make sure you arrive on time, dress appropriately, and are well groomed. Maybe even bring a breath mint or two.

3. "Toot your own horn!"

No one likes someone who is conceited; however, job interviews are a great time to self-promote yourself. Acknowledge your good qualities and why you would be valuable to the company, but be careful what you say!

4. Ask your own questions.

Questions are normally asked by the person giving the interview, but do not be afraid to ask your own questions. Asking your own questions is looked highly upon by companies.

5. Follow up after your interview.

After your interview, reiterate to the company you are thankful for the opportunity. Doing this helps the company remember who you are and gives you some "brownie points." Send them an email or a hand-written letter, just in case you haven't heard back from them.

Interviews tend to be scary and bring on a lot of stress, but if you follow these few easy steps, you'll be racking in a paycheck in no time!
