The Pros And Cons Of Winter

Summer, Fall, Spring, Winter, all are seasons that the earth and its inhabitants encounter every year. Each individual has a favorite season for very distinct reasons. My favorite season is winter and I refuse to love any other.

Every summer where the scorching heat makes sweat drip down my face, I eagerly wait for the winter months. Snow cones and water parks are fun and all, but nothing beats the feeling of walking in 40-degree weather dressed in boots, sweaters, and scarves, holding a hot cup of coffee.

Let’s start with the cons of winter and save the pros (Best) for last:

  1. Getting out of your warm, cozy bet is indeed struggle during the winter – when it’s 40 degrees outside and you’re wrapped up in your warm, fuzzy blanket, the last thing you want is to jump out of bed at 6 a.m. in the morning.
  2. Waiting for the freezing water to warm up during a shower- when you’re already freezing, stepping into cold water will only send chills down your body. The wait for the hot water is one of the longest waits I’ve ever experienced.
  3. Not having enough layers on to keep you warm- Your closet might consist of summer clothes and when winter begins, you have no idea how to adapt your clothing to this season.
  4. Driving in this weather might be a bit tragic- waiting for the ice to melt off of your car windows when you’re already running late for class is the most obnoxious experiences ever.
  5. Overplayed Christmas music- Although this music is enjoyable at first, it gets a bit annoying when it’s all you hear on every radio station and every store that you walk into.

Now for the pros of winter:

  1. Holiday sales get everyone pumped- Summer clothing goes on sale and an excess of coupons piles up in your wallet.
  2. Winter break is about to begin- After months of studying and working hard to increase that GPA, it’s finally time for a nice, long and relaxing break.
  3. The feeling of drinking hot coffee in the freezing weather- After drinking iced coffee during the summer months, that hot vanilla latte can finally satisfy your hot coffee craving.
  4. Warm chocolate chip cookies taste the best during this season- Chocolate chip cookies are delicious all year round, but they taste extra special during the cold season especially when they’re consumed while warm with a cup of milk.
  5. The chance of snow- If you live in Houston, then you may not be able to experience snow. But in the north, it’s time to build frosty the snowman!
  6. Christmas lights brighten up the entire city- However dull your city may look on a daily basis, because of the Christmas spirit it’s enlightened and looks like a wonderland.
  7. Movies are a bit more fun to watch in the weather- Holiday movies are not only funny but extremely fun to watch at night with family and friends.

What’s your favorite season?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
