The Problem With Our Society

Appearance isn't everything.

The Problem With Our Society
Melissa Spoelstra

This is the problem with our society.

There are a phenomenal amount of advertisements that everyone views every single day of their lives. These advertisements not only influence what we think about things such as products, but also what we think about each other and ourselves. There is a serious problem with our society when millions of people feel that they have to look or act a certain way to be accepted. Young women and men starve themselves and work out for hours on end for "aesthetic" improvement, only to feel heartbroken and crushed when they look in the mirror. We are taught that it's not okay to love ourselves, and many advertisements target that wound directly. It is normal to feel down on yourself sometimes, but it breaks my heart to realize that some people wake up every morning and feel disappointed in who they are as a person. If you are that person, I want you to know that you are so special. You have the ability to choose your own path in life, even if you are facing some obstacles right now. Please don't focus too much on your appearance. Learn to accept who you are because what makes everyone beautiful is the fact that we are all different in unique ways. I know that you probably get bullied and made fun of because everyone faces that in some form, but you can't let the hate of others get you down. Keep your chin up and believe in yourself. If you put your heart into your goals, you can accomplish them.

How can we fix this problem? Everyone should strive to be a positive influence within our society, even if that influence is small. We all need to realize that appearance isn't everything. Too many people don't care about others and only care about what benefits them at the given moment. Look around you and realize that you are not the only person with feelings in this world. Reach out to others who are going through hard times, because one day you might be that person who needs help. Compliment people every once and awhile, because that compliment might change their entire day. Smile. Do small acts of kindness. We have to realize that our society is not perfect, and only we can fix it by loving and accepting one another.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
