We've all heard of the term "Team Lightskin" or "Team Darkskin." These terms is a form of separation between the races, especially in the black community. Sadly, the perception is that if you're "lightskin," then you're perceived as intelligent, beautiful and overall more desirable. If you're "darkskin," then you're on two sides of the spectrum, ugly, unintelligent and less desirable. The next side of the spectrum is being considered as a complete fetish first and person second.
If you look at the definition of colorism, it is a form of prejudice or discrimination in which human beings are treated differently based on the social meanings attached to skin color. With how social media is becoming such a way of life, it's teaching the younger generation of what the definition of beauty is. Colorism is now a way of brainwashing for younger people. Colorism teaches kids that they have to be a lighter skin tone in order to be considered desirable by society.
This has gone to the point of people actually bleaching their skin to be completely lighten than their originally skin tone. Being taught from social media, television and possibly even family members that their skin isn't beautiful enough, that being dark shouldn't be something to be proud of.
It has created a sense of segregation between the black community. Being black was a way to build each other up in all aspects, not tearing each other down based on things we cannot change. What was the change that happened in the black community that caused us to have a separation between our own race?
Colorism hasn't affected a generation as much as it's affecting ours now. Given the rise of technology, it has changed our perception of beauty and of color, obviously not for the better. It has created an outlook of what we need to change in society. Color is always a touchy subject, but once it starts to create a segregation in between a race, you begin to wonder what can we change? Only time and hopefully less ignorance will help with what we call Colorism.
