The Power Of The Playlist
Abrie Richison

Imagine it’s an overcast day with an alluring blue-grey ambiance. Your eyelids are already heavy with emotion just from the colors and the sound of the rain dancing on your windows. What you need to put you over the edge is the perfect group of songs.

Now change the scene: You are in the car with your very best friends, heading to the beach with the windows down. The weather is absolutely beautiful and all you need to make this day complete is the perfect group of jams. Finally, imagine you just got dumped. He broke your heart and you want nothing more than to break the windows of his car but you are a rational human being. What you really need is a few angsty tunes to get your anger out. What do you turn to in these moments? The radio can’t help you. Too many distractions. What you need is a good set of playlists, uniquely made just for you by you.

Music has the mastery to enhance our moods and emotions if we let it. So let it. Let yourself drown in the melodies of the dramatic music you desire on that overcast day. Let yourself feel the kick of the drum as your driving with the windows down, the wind matching the rhythm of the music. Let your heart race alongside the electric guitar until your anger has turned into awe, mesmerized by the riffs. Let yourself experience music because it really is one of the best luxuries we have.

Imagine you are trying to write an article, completely at a loss for what to write about. You have your headphones in with your playlist called “find ur chill” playing on shuffle. All of a sudden, a song comes on, distracting you even more from the article that was supposed to be submitted yesterday. But, for a moment, you truly listen to the song, the lyrics, the rhythm, declaring to yourself that that’s the best damn song you’ve ever heard. You begin to think of all the good songs you’ve heard, of all the different vibes you’ve felt, of all the times you needed inspiration. And then, you begin to write, the playlist playing on between your ears while your fingers begin to dance across the keyboard.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
