Fast. Faster. Today. Today, everything has to be as fast as possible. We never have time for anything. Always busy. Always multitasking. And we take everything to go. Coffee to go and lunch on a run is not foreign to the majority of us. But most of all we're fast with messaging.
In today's society of social media, we're connected with people all over the world. Constantly. And we receive tons of messages every single day. Unsurprisingly, we have the urge and desire to keep in touch with those people and therefore respond to those tons of messages. On the go, miraculously still holding our coffee to go in the other hand, having our lunch on the run.
No matter if it's a text message, Facebook, Instagram or anything similar, those messages are usually short, fast and rarely contain full sentences. Even those of you who claim not to be multi-taskers are able to have several chat conversations open at the same time. A quick text, a quick switch, no time spent. Because time is valuable.
If you genuinely care about someone and want to let them know, put effort into that conversation. Give them some of your time. Give them time you would otherwise spare on Netflix or gaming. Because time is the most valuable thing we can give each other.
Instead of sending a quick text in between lunch and a call, not caring about spelling or syntax, take your time, sit down and write a letter. Yes, a handwritten letter. Whether it's a love letter to your boyfriend or girlfriend, or a letter to a good friend of yours, or your Mom, I promise you they will truly appreciate your effort.
A handwritten letter is powerful as it contains far more meaning than a short text message. It makes the receiver smile when its pulled out of the letterbox and there is a high chance that it will be not thrown away but kept as a symbol of a great relationship. A handwritten letter is powerful because it materializes the effort and time you take to write those words down.
So take a pen and paper, sit down and try it out. I promise you'll make someone smile. And who knows, maybe you'll get a letter back!
