The Power In Positivity

One girl's perspective on the influence of positive thinking

I understand, it’s hard to be positive all the time. We have bad days, horrible things happen, and the sun isn’t always shining bright. But I’m here to tell you, being positive most of the time, makes it way easier to handle the not so good things when they happen.

Lately I’ve been noticing more and more people around me that are consumed with negativity, and I understand why. Life is stressful; it is a constant balancing act between school, work, socializing, sleeping, and so many other things. Fortunately, stress doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Just about everything that adds to our stress can be turned into something positive, and while these things may be overwhelming at times, we would be lost without them.

I am constantly reminding myself of how lucky I am. I try to see the positive in everything. So much so, that I think it’s possible it might get annoying sometimes. The thing is, being positive is addictive. Once you learn how to focus on the positive things in life, it’s hard to spend any time focused on the negative things. I find so much strength and dignity in positive thinking, and I wish everyone could share my same feelings.

Positive thinking has become so second nature for me, I notice negative thinking a lot more than I used to. When I hear my friends or family expressing these negative thoughts, the first thing I ask myself is: How can I turn this person’s negativity into positivity? I usually end up asking them why they are thinking this way. More often than not, they aren’t even quite sure why. They themselves do not know why they are being negative.

I however, have a theory as to why so many people seem to be overly negative. I think that by doing so, they think they are protecting themselves from getting hurt if bad things happen. If they are always prepared for the bad, it won’t be as hard to handle it when it appears. Unfortunately, they are sadly mistaken. As I said at the beginning, being positive the majority of the time is what makes it easier to handle bad things when they happen.

Now I do understand that not everyone’s lives are maybe as simplistic or easy going as I make it sound, but I do know that there are people in all corners of the world that have proven that positivity is powerful. It is easy to see the downside to a situation, but what good will that bring? Not only will it bring about unhappiness for yourself, but it will also most likely do the same for everyone else around you.

Being positive isn’t always an effortless task, but the more you surround yourself with positivity, and the more you choose to be positive in your day to day life, the easier that task becomes. Positivity is contagious; it is infectious; it is exhilarating. It makes life so much more enjoyable to live and it makes life so much more rewarding. I have seen the difference that positivity has made in my own life, and I know that it will do the same thing for anyone that is lucky enough to find it.

Friendship. It's defined as the state of being attached to another person by feelings of affection or personal regard, but what really is friendship? Is it that occasional hallway talk with that one person who always manages to cheer you up? Is it that relationship you have with someone where they can be gone for a long period of time, but when they come back, it's like they never left? Is it spending every waking hour with someone, and knowing every detail about their life? Is it the relationship that's filled with fighting, but filled with even more resolution? I've learned that it's all of these things, and every friendship is different. It's a beautifully dysfunctional mess that should always be cherished and never be taken for granted.

I've known you your entire life. More than likely I held you in the first three days of it and at least one of us cried. Cousins are truly one of the best things in the world and while sometimes I complain about how many people crowd Grandma's living room on Christmas Eve, I wouldn't trade you all anything.

You are my best friends, the only people who can understand what it's like on Thanksgiving, and you are the spunkiest people I have ever met. But you as so so young, most of you are just now starting your adventures in the public education system. I mean, I'm so very young too. I'm not married, I don't have children, heck, I just started my adult life, but I do want to give you what little advice I have. My dears, these are the things I want you to know.
