The "Pointe" Of Ballet

YOU can be apart of the elite world of dance.

The world of professional ballet is similar to that of The Olympics. It is a small community that every single aspiring ballerina strives to be a part of. However, around the age of 13, all of the tutu-wearing, sparkly, little girls realize just what it would take to call yourself a member of that elite group.

Now, just because you are not going to be dancing next to Misty Copeland does not mean you should not dance! Ballet can be enjoyed by any age, any level! Here are my top three reasons why everyone should take a ballet class at least once in their life:

1. It is exercise!

Ballet stretches almost every single muscle in your body and makes you feel so fresh and relaxed after!

2. It is an art.

Ballet is an art form that combines all of the most beautiful classical arts. Classical music, beautiful dancing, breathtaking scenery, and sometimes the classic stories we grew up with. Cinderella, Shakespeare, we do it all.

3. Ballet is ageless.

Ballet has room in its big wide world for all ages. One of my favorite classes to take at my studio is the beginner adult class. I love it because it really brings you back to the basics and the most basic part of ballet is that you love it. This class, along with the beginner child class, really allows you to not only work on your basic steps and clean up small mistakes you didn't see in the advanced class, but it also allows you to have fun. The older women in the beginner class have so much fun just moving around and exercising which is so uplifting.

Ballet is an elite group of special individuals. You are one of those special individuals. You don't need to be Misty Copeland to call yourself a ballet dancer. Ballet is an art form, a sport, and something everyone has the right to enjoy.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
