The Perks Of Being Home

The Perks Of Being Home

Everyone loves the freedom of being away at college, except your parents. Your parents worry about you daily: grades, nightlife (your safety), social life, and more. Thus, when you come home, they’re ecstatic. They go out of their way to show you that you were missed, and quite frankly, it’s beautiful. Anything you need or want is yours, and there are no questions asked.

Coming home, there were a lot of things I was looking forward to and needed, as I am sure many of you are experiencing as well.

The Food

NO MORE GARBAGE! You may cook the same things day in and day out, but your parents won’t. The food is much better at home; I think that must be a fact by this point. They pay to go out and eat (we can’t afford that, we’re college kids!) at any restaurant you’d like. Upon coming home, my parents asked me where I’d like to go to eat and what I’ve missed that they can cook for me. By no means am I a chef, so I know every time I come home, I can look forward to some much better meals than I can provide myself.

The Clothes/Shoes

Your clothes are outdated? Your shoes don’t fit? You need some new things? No problem at all. Today is my first day home, and I’ve already been out getting what I need: new Sperry’s, new sandals, new Polo attire, and more. Stock up while you can, it’s a generous time while your parents are emotional, and you need to strike at this point in time. As you read this article, I’m probably at an outlet getting an updated wardrobe.

The House Pets

As a dog guy, it’s hard to live without one up in college. So coming home, I know I can expect my dog to greet me at the door. In fact, that is exactly what happened. As I walked into my house, I heard my dog whining, knowing one of his lovable owners is back from school. He comes running to me, and his tail is moving as fast as a motor on a boat. Pets are one of the greatest perks of being home. You’ve missed them for too long, and it’s apparent to see they’ve missed you just as much.

The Comfort of Your Bed

It’s like your room hasn’t changed. Wait, that’s right. My room looks exactly the same as when I left, except it’s much cleaner. Knowing I was coming home, my parents tidied it up. Sitting on my bed, all of my memories came back; it’s a bit nostalgic. However, aside from that, it’s also incredibly comfortable. There’s nothing like coming home to your own room, and your parents waiting for you with open arms.

The Family

Lastly and most importantly, you get to see your family. It’s been way too long since you’ve seen them, studying all semester to make sure they’re beaming when you get back. It’s great to catch up with all of your family, spend some time with them, and of course, vent to them. They’re eager to listen, since I’d imagine, like myself, you’d have a lot to fill them in on.

I’m sure by this point, you’re beginning to realize why it’s great to be home. So instead of wasting your time on social media and glued to your phone, embrace the fact that you’re home—even if it’s only for a week. Just remember ,though, this isn’t a one-time thing; you can expect to encounter all of these things (and much more) each and every time you walk through your front door.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
