It’s the end of September, you can’t afford to go out with your friends anymore because you’re too broke. You can’t go out and get a drink or splurge on that really nice sweater you saw at the mall. Even worse, your utilities are due soon and you have no idea how you’re going to break it to mom and dad that you need help paying that… again. If this is you the answer to all of your problems is start looking for a job.
“But I have class.”
“I don’t want to work fast food!”
“I can’t imagine being a waiter!”
“I wouldn’t have enough time to do my homework!”
“Insert another excuse here”
You need to grow up and get a job at some point especially if you have some extra stuff you want to get. Tuition at this point is paid for and figured out, you most likely have a rent system set in place for you (unless you’re paying it which means you already have two jobs, in that case you’re ahead of the game), and now you’re just looking for some extra cash. Well, if you’re looking for a job, I seriously know the perfect place for you. And that place is Starbucks.
Which leads me to the pros and cons for working at such an establishment. A chain coffee store that sells it products for SO much money, more than you can afford, yet we all try and drink it anyway because the quality is just that good.
Pros
1. Everyone that works for Starbucks isn’t a crew member, they aren’t your employee, your co-worker, they’re referred to as partners. You have partner numbers when you work at Starbucks. You work with fellow partners and the people that train you are partners, just like your manager that hire you is your partner. The business does a good job of keeping everything equal rather than make you feel small and weak.
2. You get 30% off at ANY Starbucks. I used this when I was traveling America this summer and the 30% off really makes a difference when your drink cost $6-$7 because you’re getting the largest size with three different syrups and two toppings with an extra shot.
3. During your training you get to try everything. In order to get used to making these crazy drinks you have to start actually making them. What better way to do that than to test out making it yourself and then drinking them afterwards? The training part of Starbucks might easily be the most favorite part of anyone’s Starbucks experience.
4. You get tips every week from customers. They put the collective tips together, average it out to the amount of hours you worked and when those tips were pulled, and you get extra cash to walk away with outside of your paycheck.
5. When you’re on shift you get to drink ANYTHING YOU WANT. Limitless coffee, teas, frappacinos, you name it you get it. You also can be creative and make different things. As long as you mark it out, you can have a drink every ten minutes. Highly unlikely you will, but you could.
6. You get to sample any pastry or new food product. How else could you suggest something to a customer unless you have, right? So you get to have all of these delicious pastries and you could have one every shift if you wanted. You get a marked out food item for free on your shift. So if you were eyeing up that blueberry muffin all day, you would get to have one for free as apart of your partner food.
7. If you’re not into this whole food bit, that’s okay because you could always workout after your shift to the FREE Spotify account that Starbucks provides all of its partners. That’s right, free. Your premium Spotify account that people pay monthly for is at your disposal on your laptop or phone for no charge.
8. They give you ten minute breaks as well as half and hour breaks rather than just one half hour breaks some companies try and pull on their employees.
9. They have a coffee passport that you could fill up after trying ever coffee Starbucks has to offer (except the reserves) and at the end not only can you say you’ve had all of there coffee blends you get a cool pin to put on your apron.
10. They take a poll on who they think partner of the quarter is which is almost like partner of the month but quarterly throughout the year.
Cons
1. You gain weight during training because you’re constantly eating and drinking all the sugar.
2. You might keep the weight on because of all the free drinks you get and pastries.
3. You have to clean a lot because the health inspection people come in and they’re very serious. They check everything from the labeling of items for expiration to how clean and well kept everything is in the store. (This is good news for customers though!)
Once again, this might be the place for you if you love free food and coffee, free Spotify, and extra money to play around with during your time with school. Just think of all the people that don’t work and what they do all day long. I guarentee you nothing to do with free and drink while listening to Spotify.
