The Perils Of Being A Curly Girl

Did I choose the curly hair life or did it choose me?

The Perils Of Being A Curly Girl
Nathan Walters

Having naturally curly hair is a daily adventure that I did not choose to go on. Well, in a way, I guess I did. I gave up trying to straighten it a while ago, for a few reasons. First of all, I'm lazy when it comes to my hair. If it takes me more than 10 minutes, then I won't bother. Second, if I have to get up earlier than expected to do something to my hair, then it just isn't worth it. I value my sleep. Third, I learned that my hair is actually super fine, and any type of heat or humidity makes it frizz. So I'm better off not bringing a very hot flat iron near it. But part of the reason curly hair is such an adventure is all the questions and comments that go along with it.

1. People always ask, "Is your hair naturally like that?"

Clearly, the picture on the top is not actually natural. The girl on the bottom understands the true daily struggle of curly hair. People...why would I willingly spend time with a curling iron trying to make my hair look the way it does? Nah. It's definitely natural. And once they find out it's natural, there's generally a follow up question.

2. How do you get your hair to look like that?

I shower. That's it. Or, I just get my hair wet in the morning by turning on the sink and using my hands (nature's comb) to get it wet. Sometimes I spray some detangling stuff on there, but I have kind of made my own watered down concoction that's half water. There's really no rhyme or reason to making curly hair do something...it really has a mind of its own. Sometimes naturally curly hair looks really good. Sometimes I give up and just pull half of it or all of it back.

3. Do you brush your hair?

Absolutely not. This is why.

Talk about an absolute disaster. As if I didn't already have enough issues with frizz, let's just brush through my curls. How about no. If you come near me with a brush, then I will karate chop it out of your hands faster than you can say frizz.

4. What does your hair look like straight?

It looks straight. That's it. If you want pictures, creep through my Facebook and find my middle school phase when I straightened my hair every day. Also, don't ask me to straighten it for you because it won't happen. Princess Mia was my hair inspiration...until the whole princess makeover scene. If you have it, then embrace it!

5. Hold on, you have a bee stuck in your hair.

Yes. This has actually happened. Curly hair will grab a hold of anything and not let go. Fingers, brushes, tree branches, ticks, bees...it's basically a Venus fly trap on my head. Once again, Princess Mia understands.

6. Aren't you lucky, you don't have to pay to get your hair to look like that!

Oh, yes, it's completely free. What a joy.

To be honest, I actually do like it. It took a few years for me to really embrace it and give up trying to make it look not curly, but I got there. It's a fun adventure. You never really know what it's going to do, but you know it will definitely do something!

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.
