Despite the fact that I am first and foremost an avid reader, another favorite pass time of mine, especially when I'm stressed, is watching movies. My stress level is never quite as high as during the first weeks of school. Professors are still getting their syllabi figured out, I'm still trying to get my books, and there's so much reading to be done that it just never feels like I can get my head above water. Sometimes there's nothing quite like curling up on a somewhat-comfortable couch or futon with my friends and zoning out for a few hours. Not sure what to watch? Well, that's sort of where I come in.
1. Ghostbusters (1984)
Yeah, I know they just made a reboot that's really cool, but there's nothing quite like the terrible mid-80's CGI in this version that just totally makes it hilarious.
2. Penelope (2006)
The premise may sound a bit far-fetched: A girl who was cursed to be born with the face of a pig until "one of her own kind" accepts her for who she is. However, the whimsy of the premise goes right back into the filming. It's impossible to tell just where or in what time period this movie takes place, and I think the sense of mystery makes it the perfect movie for when you just can't anymore.
3. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Heath Ledger singing. Need I say more?
4. You've Got Mail (1995)
I may be alone on this movie since I pretty much am Kathleen Kelly in the flesh, but when every single bit of my homework seems completely technology dependent, going back to this movie and seeing the dial-up Internet that Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks use makes me smile.
5. Bridget Jones' Diary (2001)
I mean, any movie featuring both Hugh Grant and Colin Firth immediately gets my vote. Not to mention the tongue-in-cheek narration of Renee Zellweger's character just adds a level of sass and hilarity that make this movie amazing.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go ignore the mass amount of reading I have to do this weekend, and have a movie marathon.
