The age-old question everyone likes to ask; what do you want to be when you grow up?
When I was younger, everyone thought it was funny when I would say things like princess or pop star. When you’re a senior in high school or in college, some still take it as a joke. My major is not something to laugh at. It’s a stepping stone into my future.
At my high school graduation party a guest asked what I planned on studying in college, and once I told them their response was, “You’ve got time to change it, and you’ll figure it all out.” I didn’t even have the words to form a response. My major may not be glorious, but it’s something I want and see myself doing in the future. I have figured it out; I know what decision is best for me.
To the person that mentioned this to me, I want to be successful in spite of you. Because when I do graduate from college with my designated major, you’ll regret what you said.
To the people who don't understand why I chose my major:
I know what I’m getting myself into.
Yes, I’m sure this is what I want.
I know you don’t agree with my choice of major.
I don’t care if my career choice is not a “high paying” job.
I don’t want to consider other options.
I’m not wasting money on my education.
I chose my major because I have a passion for it, not to please you. I don’t care if I won’t even be making 50k a year. I wasn’t placed on this Earth to be a doctor or a lawyer. Money doesn’t matter when I know this will be a job I’m good at and enjoy doing. My future career is not anyone’s concern but mine, and I wish everyone could understand that.
