To The People Back Home

The Boot has been through a lot lately, but we will come out on top.

Being four hours away has never been so hard for me. This time last year, I would have never thought that the Bootheel would ever take such a hard hit. We might be small, but we're strong. Now here we are, burying another person gone way to soon. Will we ever catch a break?

Let's face it, this summer was one for the books. I mean that in the worst way possible. From loosing loved ones to best friends, everyone was affected by this tragic time. For many of us, we saw moving back to school as a blessing. It would get us away from the terrible loophole that we were stuck in. Unfortunately, we have never been so wrong.

I might always complain about my small town, but so many people I love are still there. It kills me knowing that I am unable to go home when bad things happen. I would give anything to be there to support you guys in this time of need. That being said, we can get through this. If there was only one thing I learned from growing up down there, it would be that we can handle anything. It might be hard but we can get through it.

We are stronger than we look and feel. We have people that are always there for us. After every tough loss, I have been able to look around and see my friends are there for me and everyone else. We might keep taking one hit right after the other, but I promise we will come out on top. My thoughts and prayers are always with the Boot.

As I write this, I have had "You Should Be Here" by Cole Swindell on repeat. At times it feels as if this song was written for us. I personally know that it is the song choice of many in times like this. It is really used after the loss of a friend, which many of us are faced with right now.

Basically what this sappy, depressing article is saying is to stay strong. The bad times will eventually end and we will be reminded why we love the Bootheel. That being said, can everyone promise each other to stay safe and not put this town through more loss. I think it's safe to say we have reached our capacity for now. Don't take your loved ones for granted and spend plenty of time doing stupid things with your friends. You never know when in a split instant you could lose them. Count your blessings and keep those that aren't as lucky in your thoughts. Come together as a community to honor those we have lost.

I would like to end my article doing something a little different than usual. Generally when I write it is for myself. However, this article is for the ones we lost. I won't include their names but we all know who they are. Every single one of them has impacted my life in some way and I am forever grateful of that. I miss you all dearly. Just saying, the Bootheel has the best guardian angels we could ask for.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
