Escape to Penobscot Bay in Maine

The Penobscot Bay: The Perfect Summer Getaway

If you've ever been to Maine, a wash of nostalgia and longing probably rushes over you. In the top right corner of our beautiful nation lies this evergreen painted state. Maine is a common summer destination for families, especially in the month of August and there certainly is a reason for it. Where I go with my family is way up north in the Penobscot bay and I personally believe it is the greatest place on earth and here is why.

Island hopping

The bay is full of small islands you can visit for the day. The water may be freezing, but after roasting on a boat you can’t resist. It’s so fun to pack a lunch and explore each island collecting sea glass or finding sea urchins.

Fresh lobstah

Lobster here is like oxygen, need it to survive. In these small island towns, lobster fishing is where most people get their income. The bay is scattered with thousands and thousands of lobster pots and each fisherman has a specific buoy. For some reason my taste buds fail to except the yumminess of this shellfish, but everyone else absolutely raves about the lobster rolls and they are as fresh as can be.

The Communities

In small island towns communities are close nit and everyone is looking out for one another and supporting each others businesses. On Vinalhaven, one of the fox islands my family has been going to for years, it is rude if you don’t wave when passing one another on the road or flashing a smile when walking by and I absolutely love it.

The Stars

On a clear night on the water you feel like you were just transported to space because the islands are so far from any main land lights. If you have yet to see a shooting star, this is the place to be. The milky way is clear as day and you can connect the dots to find any constellation. It's completely mesmerizing.

Berries

If you like blueberry pie, you haven't tasted anything until you've had one made with hand picked Maine blueberries. They are tiny, delicious, and scattered all over these islands just waiting to be plucked from their bushes. Raspberries and blackberries are everywhere as well, giving the air a sweet aroma.

Disconnecting

Where I go in Maine, finding good cell services is like finding a good movie on Netflix, hopeless. The first day is always a little tough, but once you get used to the quiet and media-less life you can allow yourself to truly relax and disconnect from the rest of world.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
