The 88th Academy Awards was expected to be one of the most highly anticipated episodes in the show's history, and it certainly did not disappoint. This year, the Oscars was more than just a show to celebrate the nominees. Rather, it was a platform where numerous issues were addressed on live television, including the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, gender equality, sexual assault, and even climate change. To help break it all down for you, here is everyone's favorite (and long-awaited) Oscar winner, Leonardo DiCaprio.
1. Host Chris Rock tackled the #OscarsSoWhite controversy in his monologue, even taking a jab at people like Leo for always getting remarkable roles every single year
Even though it was a fair point, it sure made a lot of people in the room feel awkward.
2. Sam Smith flawlessly performed his song "Writing on the Wall," which would later beat out Lady Gaga for Best Original Song
Although many people were not too happy about this, can we all just agree that Sam Smith should sing every "Bond" song from here on out?
3. Chris Rock briefly stepped away from talking about Hollywood's diversity problem to sell Girl Scout cookies
And get me all the Thin Mints while you're at it, Jimmy.
4. C3PO, R2D2 and BB8 all made an appearance on the Oscars stage together, and "Room's" Jacob Tremblay once again showed why he is the most adorable kid ever
Almost as adorable as young Leo here. *swoon*
5. The in-memoriam video honored some of Hollywood's greatest, including Alan Rickman, David Bowie, and Leonard Nimoy
Gone, but never forgotten.
6. Mark Rylance upset Mark Ruffalo and Sylvester Stallone for Best Supporting Actor
Don't worry guys, Leo knows just how you feel.
7. "Mad Max" dominated the night with a staggering six Oscar wins, completely shutting out "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"
It's fine, it wasn't like "The Force Awakens" was so good that it revitalized an entire franchise or broke any records or anything.
8. Lady Gaga addressed sexual assault with a powerful and emotional performance of her song "Til It Happens To You" and was joined by 50 survivors on stage
#ItsOnUs
9. Brie Larson soon won Best Actress, leading to the moment we had all been waiting for
10. Twenty-two years, countless memes
11. Literally ALL the memes
12. 8,054 days after his first nomination, Leonardo DiCaprio finally took home the Oscar for Best Actor
And with that, the world was finally right again.
13. And to top it all off, DiCaprio used his speech to address another important issue of the night -- climate change
What. A. Champ.
14. You finally did it, Leo. Bravo!
