To The One Who Took My Seat

For four years we filled the halls of an outdated school. We brought life to the lifeless classrooms and cheer to the lives of one another. For years we shared our secrets with our friends and the walls. We filled up chairs in a classroom in hopes of retaining something, anything. Throughout our time at this place we cultivated friendships, had several emotional breakdowns, and poured ourselves over our work. Most of all we counted down the days until we were handed a piece of parchment paper wrapped in leather. Then the feelings became real. It suddenly hit that we would not be returning to these halls in the fall. These walls would hold our secrets like the ones before us.

While graduation was a much awaited event it suddenly feels like an earthquake that has rocked your world and separated you from the only life you knew. Instead, there will be a new set of eager individuals entering after summer. They like you are wide eyed and scared. The only thing you can ask of them is that they treat this place well. You pray that they don’t mistreat the place you have learned to call home. That these students continue the pride that you have in your heart. Honoring your alma mater the way it should be. Making sure to bring honor to the name of the school, allowing it to grow academically and socially. Most of all, you hpe they create their own memories.

You hope they have memories when the teacher becomes so flustered she cries. Or the countless reminders to be quiet. As an Alumni you want the new bees to share secrets with the walls, to fall in love with this place. To fall in love with each other. So that at the end of four years they feel the same pang of remorse and pride in their heart. After all, you were once in their shoes. You made good on your promise and now it is their turn to pave their own futures in these halls. So to all freshman, take care of our home, it holds a special place in our heart .

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
