As I gear up for the upcoming semester, I only have one thought so far: “Man, am I tired.” Unlike the majority at my university, I didn’t graduate from high school. I received my G.E.D the year after my original graduation date. Since then, I have been taking college classes all year around before transferring to my current school. It’s been quite the journey. I have failed classes and had to retake them. I had to work as well as keep on top of my school work. There were nights where I thought I was wasting my time. I cried a lot. Some nights I couldn’t sleep. I was late to class more than a few times. I even lost my financial aid.
But by the grace of God, I kept going.
Before I knew it, I was looking at my last semester at my community college before I would transfer to Baldwin Wallace University. Even then, I struggled. I had to withdraw from my final math class and had to vow to take it a third time at BW. At that point, I wanted to give up. However, I realized I came too far. With the support of God, my family, and friends, I was able to keep going and finish my first year at BW with a three point grade average.
Now I’m not saying all of this to brag, nor am I trying to accumulate accolades for “sticking it out.” What I want more than anything is to encourage students over the age 21 who are still in undergrad after an extra year or two. You can do it. Sometimes balancing college with a full time work schedule and a child is the most difficult thing you can do, but it’s so worth it once you walk across that stage. If you need help, ask for it. Find your support system. I spent countless Thursdays in the counseling office. They’re there to help. Your dreams are still worth going after no matter how long it takes. And if you have to take some time off and regroup, do it. Take your time. Just don’t give up. Let’s make this fall a great one!
Hang in there.
