I spent this summer in NYC, and while I was there I composed a litany of poems on different topics. This poem in particular is about strangers on a subway train, which I wrote on the train from Brooklyn to Manhattan. Enjoy.
Two lovers diverge
On the subway train
"I knew you once,
Let's go again—
Come back,"
But he's gone
And she's ashamed.
He didn't recognize
Her pretty face
"It's me, my love,
Love not in vain—
Come closer,"
But he leaves
And she's afraid.
She swore 'twas him
Not a stranger's gaze
"Can't you see, my love,
It's me, my love,
Remember?"
But he's boarding
Yet another train.
So there she sits,
A parallel vision
"I see my reflection,
But my love—
What misdirection!"
But he's on another plane
Another consciousness,
Another time,
Another place.
