The New Starbucks Green Cups: What To Know And Think About
The Washington Post

As Halloween is winding down, the chaos of Thanksgiving and Christmas is rising. From cooking, Black Friday plans, parades, decorating, the lights in small and large towns, as well as your daily dose of pumpkin spice and peppermint mocha flavored drinks. However something is different that most people have taken to heart; the missing Holiday cups from Starbucks, also dubbed as the notorious "red" cups. Traditionally, each November to early December, Starbucks prepares their new seasonal flavors on top of these colored cups to symbolize the changing seasons, winter, and a time of difference. The green cups, however, have caused a recent global outrage. When the cups debuted on November 1st, I noted how they were not the red cups and I adopted to the changes, well, because red and green traditionally resemble Christmas colors, but also green is a color for unity or rebirth. The green cups are designed with hundreds of different faces , which was specified to resemble diversity and coming together as a nation amongst the closing of the 2016 Presidential Election. Sources everywhere have been sharing various designs of the red cups and, yet, they have all dropped the traditional hints of "No Peeking" until November 10. I clearly remember the first week of November as the release date last year when dropping in for my daily dose of Starbucks before or after school. I personally do not see why people are angry with these new green cups, when, maybe, the red cups are simply still not in their debut period. With all that has been going on within these past few months, like the Election, the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series for the first time since 1908, Iowa police shootings, the Dakota pipeline protest, the shootings in Orlando, shootings within 3+ states dealing with the lives of people who reside in our country, causing the spread and arguments of the widespread hashtags, #BlackLivesMatter and #BlueLivesMatter. These events may not all be bad, but when we focus on the good events, we may notice how there is less violence or negativity between others. Unfortunately, the violence is still ongoing and the spread of peace, love, and unity may be an ideal approach for our country. We live in a corrupt society and are still fighting against the major historical issues like racism, gun control, feminism, gay rights; the Presidential Election is the next big milestone for our country, which is a time for us to think about our values and how to do nothing but better our society. As much as November-December is a time of love, to be thankful for what we have, as well as enjoying the limited festivities each year, these new green cups are only something to think about, not as a threat or a pause to the Red cups for good. The green cups are a symbol of shared values, unity, and thinking about those cups in a positive or negative way can enable various ideas and beliefs to build on how our country will progress from not only the 2016 Presidential Election, but the year of 2016 as a whole.
