To the New Romantics out there,
Being the crazy Taylor Swift fan that I am, I love her song, “New Romantics”, which is on the deluxe album of 1989. But even better than that, the song has a deeper message to me. The lyrics tell the life of the “New Romantics”, who are free-spirited, who aren't held down by those who want to bring them down, and who are happy in their own state of mind. I feel that in my late teens and early twenties now that this isn’t the time to worry about settling down or being heartbroken. This is the time to embrace the spirituality and open-mindedness that can take you anywhere and lead you to finding yourself.
So, some of these lyrics explain what this kind of experience is.
“‘Cause baby I could build a castle out of all the bricks they threw at me”
People will judge you and tell you that you need to settle for something or someone, but you have the rest of your life to do that. Right now, you’re finding yourself, and only the people who want to be around for your wins and losses are the ones worth keeping.
“Heartbreak is the national anthem, we sing it proudly”
You’ve been in so many relationships, romantic and not, that have let you down and disappointed you. You don’t have to settle for any less than you deserve. You live a life where the people who mean the most to you will come to you, you don’t have to go looking for them.
“We need love, but all we want is danger”
In order to find who you are, you have to take risks and sacrifice things. It is dangerous in its own way. You need love and support from your family and friends at this time in your life.
“Everyday is like a battle, but every night with us is like a dream”
You can be difficult, easy, emotional, stoic, all kinds of emotions. It can be an essential battle for you. However, your openness and free-spirit allows you to flock people towards you to have fun and live freely.
“We are too busy dancing, to get knocked off our feet”
That’s right! You’re too busy dancing your shoes off instead of being swept off of your feet. That’s the fun in being yourself and finding yourself! Eventually, there will be a person to sweep you off of your feet at the right time and place in your life.
“The best people in life are free”
This is the time in your life where you are free to do as you choose. You are free to make your own decisions-good or bad. You’re painting your own picture and drawing your own path. Being free allows you to not be obligated to anyone but yourself and the ones you love. You can find your direction with whomever wants to tag along with you. Because, as it is sung, “Baby we’re the New Romantics, the best people in life are free”.
Sincerely, A New Romantic.
