Professional wrestling has been considered corny, fake and pre-determined for years. But there’s a lot more into wrestling. Such as their athleticism and mesmerizing maneuvers in the ring. They work over 300 nights a year to entertain people on their wrestling craft.
Sometimes there are gimmicks that are entertaining like Stone Cold Steve Austin and Macho Man Randy Savage. But there have been times where there have been bad gimmicks like John Cena and Fandango. Those gimmicks pale in comparison when you have three grown men acting drunk at a bar mitzvah on a weekly basis. Those guys are known as The New Day and they symbolize how corny wrestling is.
The New Day consists of Kofi Kingston, Big E Langston and Xavier Woods who had potential of being excellent wrestlers. They are entertaining in the WWE Universe and fans considered them the best act in the company. However, me and other hardcore wrestling fans aren't fans of the group.
Just watch their tactics on "Monday Night Raw"and "Thursday Night Smackdown!" You have Langston doing an awful rendition of Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie.” Kofi Kingston talking about child abuse and Xavier Woods is the king of obnoxious when he plays the trombone. It gets old after awhile and I don't find them entertaining.
They’re the worst gimmick going today. I’ve seen awful gimmicks like Adam Rose, Billy and Chuck, Bastion Booger and Mantaur in the past but the New Day tops the list. The Dec. 28 edition of "Raw" was the final straw of my disgust on the stable. They insult people's intelligence and make wrestling look stupid.
The New Day has left a sour taste out of people's mouths and have second guessed their passion for professional wrestling. As much as people make fun of American Males (Marcus Bagwell and Scotty Riggs) from World Championship Wrestling with their entrance music and "Magic Mike" looks, they’re more manly than the New Day.
The New Day is also a stereotype because not all people of color act this way. Those three make African Americans look bad with the way they act in the WWE. The company is no strangers on bad stereotypes, look at the Mexicools (Super Crazy, Psicosis and Juventud Guerrera) and Nation of Domination (Ron Simmons, The Rock, D’Lo Brown and Mark Henry) for example.
As a Hispanic, the Mexicools gimmick was racist and hurt guys like Juventud Guerrera’s credibility as a wrestler. He was booked as a high flying cruiserweight in World Championship Wrestling but looked like a fool wearing dirty mechanic gear and driving lawn mowers in the ring.
The Nation of Domination on the other hand, they did their job by making people hate them because they used their freedom of rights card to demand respect. There was an infamous Raw Is War segment where the Nation came into the locker room and saw their area being trashed with racial and derogatory slurs. At least the Nation had masculinity which the New Day doesn't.
At the end of the day, no matter how many times the New Day twerks or throw trombones to attack their opponent, they're not edgy. Add insult to injury, their obsessed with unicorns. Yes, they endorse unicorn horns. That alone makes me hate wrestling sometimes.
Gimmicks like the New Day was acceptable in the 80s and early 90s but it just won't fly today. This generation wants to see manly things like beating their opponents into a bloody pulp. The New Day isn't one of those manly groups in combat sports. The sport can be corny and the New Day are one of the reasons why people watch MMA over wrestling.
