The Nation Does A Good Thing

But it might make you cry...

The Nation Does A Good Thing
Brian Bewley

This Christmas season, we have family and friends around us celebrating the end of a pretty okay year. But there are those of us who aren't as lucky as us, either their loved one is serving overseas, or the cost of their loved one coming home is too high for them to come home to see them, or probably the worst of all, they have either lost a loved one closest to the Christmas season.

Phillip Defranco is a well known Youtuber with almost 5 million followers, which have been nicknamed 'The Nation'. He does a daily news show during the week as well as daily vlogs. He's a pretty honest guy who just wants to initiate a conversation worldwide. But on November 28th 2016, and he told a story from a maned named Jason Worley that brought many to tears and caused many to take action.

He told his followers about a message that he had received, titled A message for Phil, and it read, "...I have watched Phil for years now and his words have always brought me comfort in times of great loss. Last Thursday, I lost my children Tyler, age 7 and Charlee age 3, in a horrific tragedy." Phil told his audience about how this man and his children would watch their videos, and then reading aloud the final sentence in the message he had received, saying, "Any kind words you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Hold Trey [Phil's son] close, he is ever so special."

This heartbreaking story is continued as Phil goes on, saying that others dug deeper and reveal that it was the children's own mother who had killed them, because she and her husband were getting a divorce and she didn't want her husband to take her kids away. She stabbed the and then stabbed herself, however the mother survived. " ...And I don't know what to say," Phil said into the camera,"Two innocent children were killed, there furthers stolen by the person that gave them life... So much love was just ripped from Jason's life. Nothing seems adequate because nothing is adequate for this." Phil further explained by saying," The moment you have a kid, it's just, love and then just fear, fear hat somethings gonna happen to them. And he's living this nightmare. Because of this selfish, horrible person, a horrible monster. So to Jason, to your family, to everyone affected, It's just words. I hope you get through this, this just unfair situation."

Phil then spoke abut how Jason's employers started a gofundme page, which I'll link down below and with the help of the Nation and many other generous donors, as of right now has reached $56,217 of the $20,000 goal.

No amount of money can ever replace Jason's children, but the funds can go to help pay for the funeral expenses and allow Jason to deal with his grief and not have to worry about the expenses for both of his children, as well as giving him time to recover.

While this isn't the most recent news, I felt like this story should be heard. Yes, it is sad and terrible that Tyler and Charlee had to be taken from us too soon. No parent should ever have to deal with the loss of a child, and certainly not more than one. Many complain how 2016 has been practically been one of the worst years ever, and sometimes it's for some pretty superficial reasons. But the response from the Nation and the other generous donors may help you regain some of that faith in humanity that you may have lost. So while your around the dinner table this holiday season, really remember what your thankful for. Give your family and friends a hug, and tell them you love them, because no day is ever guaranteed. I wish you the best holidays and a safe new years!

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
