Most of us start our day by cleaning our mouths with what seems to be a rather clean toothbrush, however, looking past the surface, something disgusting lies below our white bristles: fecal matter.
Yes, fecal as in poop. As it turns out, when you push that flush handle, an aerosol of toilet water (and whatever is in it) is sprayed all around your bathroom, and that moist toothbrush of yours creates the perfect environment for fecal bacteria to land and grow. If your own feces isn’t disgusting enough for you, just think about how many family members or friends have went #2 in your bathroom… That’s right… their fecal matter has been on your brush too.
If you're not convinced, you can check out this MythBusters MiniMyth clip where the guys test out this is exact myth, and spoiler alert: It's not a myth. They go as far as testing if toothbrushes outside of your bathroom can get "infected", but I'll let you find out the answer to that one.
So, with all of this said, shouldn’t you be worried about catching some horrible disease? Well… not really. It turns out that the levels of fecal bacteria that grow on there really aren’t high enough to harm us… I mean, you have been brushing your teeth with poop all of your life, and you’re still alive. But, if you still want a solution to keep this stuff away from your toothbrush, you could always get a brush cover.
