The Music of Our Lives

What would we do without it?

Everyone loves music. Music narrates our lives on a daily basis. And the best part is, everyone has different tastes! Some people enjoy the slow, dancing notes of Classical, while others enjoy the hard strums of Rock. We find beauty and meaning in every note, word, chord, and rhyme. This is probably one of the most beautiful things about human nature.

We use music in a variety of ways. We use it to focus, to distract ourselves, to entertain us, and even to set certain moods. Our playlists are the soundtracks to our lives and we don't even realize it. That being said, you can tell a lot about a person from the kind of music they listen to. What songs interest them can tell more about what's going on inside someone's head than their lips will ever reveal.

I am personally a fan of many kinds of music. Some say I have a style, but I don't know what that would be called. I prefer to just call it Alternative. A common theme in my music though is either sound or lyrics. When I am upset over something, the lyrics become more powerful. When I'm happy, my music takes a lighter sound that makes you want to dance. It's all about what's going on in your mind. In this way, I've learned to tell when something is bothering my friends and family. I'm well versed in their musical tastes, so when there's a shift in what they listen to, I can usually tell something is up.

I have to say, though, my absolute favorite part of music is when you get to that one part of the song that you love. Those few notes, or that one line that gets stuck in your head for days on end. When you reach that part, chills are sent up your spine and you just grin. There's power in music. However, there's only power in music because there's power in sound and in words.

Every day we listen to music. We've bought more headphones, earbuds, and speakers than we realize. Music blasts through the air constantly, and it's wonderful. Sure, we may not like all the same songs or styles of music, but there's the common ground of loving music and wanting to hear more of it. Music creates culture, builds individuals, and molds the minds of people and places. Yes, music even affects architecture. Someone had to think of how the sound would travel in that rock show stadium. Music is mystical, wondrous and the most beautiful thing that can exist. It takes a special person and a keen ear to create it, but it takes absolutely nothing to appreciate it. Musical artists have a wonderful gift that they share with the world. Appreciate the music in your life, because I can promise that nobody would enjoy a life without it.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
