'Wonder Woman' Is The Movie Women Needed And The Movie Men Wouldn't Understand

The wonderful movie that women needed.

Wonder Woman was the first female that was as powerful as Superman, as smart as Batman, and as charming as Spiderman, to go along with her good looks. I was always excited whenever her character was on screen because she commanded a level of respect few women superheroes could achieve.

There were the women of X-Men (Jean Grey, Storm, Shadow cat, and Mystique) who were often background-characters or damsels in distress. There was Batgirl but she never able to steal the scenes from Batman or Robin.

Her name alone, Bat “girl” presents her as a juvenile and immature figure. In other genres outside of superheroes, there was Daphne and Velma from Scooby Doo. Daphne was always the damsel or Fred’s love interest and Velma was the nerdy girl in the background.

There were few, if any, female characters that stood out the way Wonder Woman did. So, when I saw that Wonder Woman would be getting her own movie, I was beyond excited to support a female superhero.

Last summer, I went to the movies to see "Wonder Woman" and after 2 ½ hours, I left disappointed. The movie was bland and formulaic missing any chance to break any new ground. I was angry that Diana of Themyscira wasn't portrayed the way I would have liked to see her. Although I haven’t seen "Black Panther" yet, I feel this movie will give me a similar outcome.

A movie that is marketed as this cultural phenomenon with a woman or African American in leading superhero role celebrated worldwide. The constant tone attributed to the modern movies is selling a brand that doesn’t need to be sold to reap as much profit from the film.

Per phase, this movie wasn’t made for me.

This movie is for the millions of women who continue to fight sexism daily.

This is for the women who had to endure watching men in tights fight villains.

This is for the women who had to watch other women being sexualized and exploited on screen for a male audience.

This movie is for the young girls who are in need of positive female representation and to be assured they can be whatever they want.

The movie wasn’t the worst superhero movie I’ve ever seen (i.e. Wolverine Origins, Green Lantern, Amazing Spiderman) but it wasn’t the best superhero movie either. In the end, this movie wasn’t for me but that’s not a bad thing.

I hope the success of this movie will prompt Hollywood to make more movies with a woman in leading roles. It is important for young girls to have representation in the superhero fil genre. The impact will show girls that they can be anything and that no barrier placed against them will stop them.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
