‘Tis the season of reindeer and snow and Santa and hot chocolate. One of the best things about the impending holiday is, of course, the music.
It seems like there’s a song for everybody. Are you religious? “Silent Night” or “Mary Did You Know?” might be your jams. Are you into catchy tunes? Try “Jingle Bells” or “Deck the Halls.” Are you into someone singing the same words over and over for what feels like an eternity? “The Twelve Days of Christmas” is definitely for you.
However, there is one song that seems to have been glossed over by the general public. It has everything: an established belief, catchy-ness, and even a pinch of repetition. I think it has the potential to become a classic, if more people just listened to it.
Here it is, my all-time favorite Christmas song: Lou Monte’s “Dominick the Donkey.”
I know you’re probably staring at your screen thinking, “How does a song about a donkey have anything to do with Christmas?” Hear me out: it’s a two and a half minute headbanger about an Italian Christmas donkey (because, you know, Italy’s too hilly for reindeer). It’s got donkey sounds, some phrases in Italian, and a lot of “la la las.” It’s flawless.
Still not convinced? Listen to it. You won’t regret it.
Okay, I can tell that I’ve convinced you. Now get out there and spread some donkey-filled Christmas cheer!
