The Most Important Thing In Your Life Is You
Odyssey Online

Sometimes life gets so busy and jammed-packed that you forget to allot time for yourself. You neglect your own well-being because you’re so busy concerning yourself with obligations to this and promises to that. You don’t do this intentionally, and by the time you notice the toll it’s taken on you, it’s already too late. You’re worn down, and you’re tired. You’ve taken too much on your plate and you can’t finish it all.

And often times there’s no one there to tell you that it’s certainly okay to put yourself first. That no one is going to blame you or judge you negatively if you suddenly break out of your daily routine to make sure you’re okay; to just check up on yourself and to make sure you can catch up with how fast this world is turning and how quickly this life is passing by. We all need a breather sometimes—we can only hold our breaths for so long.

I’m not saying that this is an excuse to skip class or to not do homework or to quit your job. This is a PSA to remember to relax and to take it easy. Overworking does exist, and being overtired is just as hard to overcome as it is to experience. There needs to be a balance of fun and work—without the other there will be too much of one and the scale won’t be stable and neither will you.

Remember, the most important thing in your life is you. Without you, there isn’t life and there isn’t light. I know it may sound selfish, but you have to be selfish sometimes in order to live your life to your fullest. You have to learn how to put yourself first—maybe not all the time, but it should be a priority most of the time. The time we have on this earth is very precious, due to the fact that it’s very limited. We don’t have an endless supply of the seconds we breathe in, of the minutes we soak up, of the hours we spend, of the days we collect. Most of this time should be reserved for you and for you only.

So remember, no matter how important an assignment is or how important a shift at work is, there’s nothing that’s more important than you—especially if you need the time to build yourself back up and recover from life in general. Everything else can wait—no matter how fast the world is spinning today, everything can wait until tomorrow if it means that every being of you is all well.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
