"Feminism" is a word many are afraid to be associated with or identified by. As the third wave of feminism continues, there are more radical viewpoints of the movement; however, this should not define the entirety of it. Feminism is the belief that men and women are equal. In the United States, we are closer to equality than many other nations, especially poverty-sticken, paternal-dominated societies. Instead of living in a world where we are frightened by the idea of feminism, we need to turn our eyes to women who are fearful of their lives through constant sexual abuse, sex trafficking and genital mutilation. These are the unheard voices who need fearless people to speak on their behalf and bring about change. With the current election and Hurricane Matthew hitting Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, we need to evaluate our beliefs on the issue and move past the negative stigma surrounded by the word feminism.
