The Media Is Brainwashing Us: We Live In A World Of Perception
Michelle Cabanas

As you can see, not a lot of people are very happy about our new U.S. President. I am not going to argue about this because I do not know much about politics, heck I don't even know much about the president himself. Why is that? Because almost everything that is shown on TV, Twitter, Facebook, etc. is not real, or it is exaggerated. I am not saying that I am for him, but I believe that we are more scared than we should be.

I personally never watched any of the debates. This makes me think of the "Allegory of the Cave," because all the prisoners ever saw were the shadows, and to me, I along with a lot of other people, are the prisoners and the shadows are the media. The shadows could be seen as something big and vicious, even though it can just be as simple as a harmless tree. The people who have been freed know the truth, which is not many of them, just like this world, just like this country; not many of us know what's going on and if we did, no one would believe us because everyone interprets everything differently in this world.

So the new president is racist? The new president is ignorant? The new president hates gay people? The people who support him are ignorant? The people who support him are racist, anti-LGBT? Is this actually true? Maybe for some of them, but everyone is fighting and hating each other now because they think this person or that person is hateful and doesn't care about others but themselves. Coming from a kid who's parents are immigrants themselves, coming from someone who was born here to have that "American dream," I myself was terrified, but then I realized something. Have we ever stopped and asked anyone out in the streets, any friend of ours, any neighbors of ours, if they truly hate us or if they truly think we should leave?

We have been relying on the Internet so much that we don't know what reality is anymore, we just don't. We are lost souls. I have to admit because of the Internet itself, I was afraid to even go out after elections were over. I had some sort of hatred for people who voted for him, I was going to block people. But what for? This doesn't make me any better than them, it doesn't make me a good human.

I even spoke to my manager the other day because I was afraid that our very own customers would start yelling racist things at me or would do things to make me feel like a minority. I remember him saying,"Michelle, the media changes everything. They have brain-washed everyone. Do not believe what any of them say." I must admit that I admire my manager because he has been supportive and caring since day 1, so if he says that everything will be okay, then I believe it. This really woke me up.

So I stopped and realized as I was snapping myself out of it- Why not give the president and others a chance? I know I have been given chances, I know I have given others chances. Having hatred within ourselves will just hurt us both internally and externally. I don't want anyone to end up being locked up, end up in a hospital, or end up emotionally drained. We jut cannot let these memes, these posts, these news, take over our lives. Snap yourself back into reality.

"Omg, she is for Trump now?" No I'm not at all. I am for myself, for my family, and friends. It is better to focus on ourselves to make ourselves stronger. Our surroundings will be our surroundings, don't let it take advantage of you. Make this country and this world better for yourself and the people that you love by taking care of yourselves first. If you want peace and equity, don't fight people who are against that because, "we the people," have to make this country better for ourselves, our friends, our family, our neighbors, and our very own enemies.

As corny as it sounds, it's true. Stop fighting fire with fire.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…
