The Matter Of Weight In America

Beauty comes all in sizes.

The Matter Of Weight In America

Body image is a major issue in America today. You don't need a Ph.D. to see the importance of body image, body shaming, and a woman's weight. Every magazine, tabloid, and pop culture show has mentioned the topic of the female physic in some form or another. Whether they are trashing body shamers or showing off the new borderline anorexic model, social media is a forerunner in the issue. Everyone seems to have a different opinion on what is an isn't ideal, how we should treat each other, what a female should look like. I say enough!

When did a size seven become anything but what it is, a pant size? Why do we call girls thick? Why does it have to be that every time I look in the mirror I feel like crying because my stomach isn't flat? Would you look at a baby and say it was fat? Then why would you say it to someone who can comprehend what you're saying? It is never okay to make someone feel anything less than beautiful, it is never okay to make someone feel insecure because of their weight. No matter the waist size every girl is beautiful for the person she is on the inside. It doesn't matter if her stomach isn't flat, if there's no gap between her thighs, she is beautiful. No girl should look in a mirror and think she looks too fat. No girl should have to ask her friends if she's too fat to wear the outfit she wants. Rock it, own your body, be confident in your skin. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. You are the only you and that is a wonderful thing, never let size lesson your value.

It goes the other way as well. Just because body shaming has focused on heavy set women, doesn't mean we should start shamming those who are not. The worst way to solve a problem is by doing the exact same thing as the person who originally done wrong. Two lefts can never make a right. It only makes matters worse, it only adds to the problem when we shift the hate, the shamming, from person to person. Nothing was ever solved through hate, nothing will ever be solved through hate. When we stop hating on people for the way they look and start loving people for who they are we'll all be so much happier. Just remember, no matter what anyone says, no matter what you think when you look in the mirror, you are beautiful, you are unique, and you should never change your self to make someone else happy.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
