The Many Stages of Summer Vacation

Summer just doesn't blend together like it used too.

Ah summer. The season that every student from 1st grade and beyond looks forward to at the end of each school year.

3 months.

3 solid months of nothing school related.

Sounds great right? Well it is when you are a kid. Three months of blissful peace, everything just molds together. Then suddenly you're older and you come to realize that blissful summer feeling comes in stages.

Stage 1: Anticipation.

It's the last month or so of school. It feels like everything is starting to wind down. Teachers are talking about final projects, final tests, final quizzes etc. Everything is just final. To top it all off you start seeing commercials on TV about summer sales.

Stage 2: Freedom.

The last day of school. The day before the beginning of summer. You know that as soon as that final class ends or the clock hits that time-that you are walking out of school for 3 months. Unless you're a senior in high school or college, then you're graduating.

Stage 3: Independence.

You have the whole summer in front of you. Without school in the picture, you have a lot more time to do the things that you want and need to do.

Stage 4: Plans.

You probably started planning the things that you wanted to do over vacation months before. Maybe you planned on making some money so you decide to take on a summer job for example.

Stage 5: Creeping.

This is when the little reminders of the school start to creep up on you. The realization that summer is almost halfway over and before you know it school will here. The initial summer shock is generally over.

Stage 6: Halfway Point.

The point of time when you realize that summer truly is halfway over. You feel like it went by so fast and you only know that it'll go by faster at this point.

Stage 7: Cling.

We're at the last few weeks or so of vacation. Whether you were busy the whole time or did nothing-you strive to cherish these last couple weeks.

Stage 8: Here.

This is the point where you start to come across more and more reminders that you are heading towards the end. Oh great now I have that song stuck in my head!

Stage 9: Plans.

Now we're at that plan stage of summer vacation, only this time you're preparing for the new school year. Whether it be back to school shopping or trying to finish that summer reading project that you could have done weeks ago.

Stage 10: Last Days.

Ah the last couples days before school starts. That feeling of finality during the first stage returns.

Stage 11: It's Time.

You wake up and begin a somewhat familiar routine that you hadn't thought about in moments. You head to school, only this time everything is new because you move up a step. It's like if you've graduated college and you go onto grad school. You're moving up a step.

Got to love the stages.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
