The "Oh" Major

Just because I am not majoring in biology or chemistry, does not mean my major is any less important.

The "Oh" Major

Being in college alone is stressful—the hard classes, the staying up late to study for tests, writing essays every week, the list goes on. But then to add to that you have to "impress" people with your major. Every time someone asks me what my major is, I hesitate. Why? Because their response is always, "Oh, that's cool." Leaving me to think my major is not as important as any other major.

College students, do not feel bad about your major, no matter what it is. No major is a useless major, because we need people for all jobs. Yes, there are doctors, and yes there are lawyers, but having a career or major that you are truly passionate about is worth so much more than that title your major puts on you.

Just because I am not majoring in biology or chemistry, does not mean my major is any less important.

My major is multimedia journalism, and my minor is in communications. I have gained so many different skills from this major and minor. I always hold a leadership position, and I know how to connect with people. A lot of my "doctor" friends do not have the public speaking skills I do, and yes, public speaking can land you an awesome job. I network with important people and have more connections than most of my college friends. Jobs look for those leadership skills in people. They want someone outgoing and positive, who isn't afraid to speak in front of others.

All majors teach people different skills. If you are an education major, you obviously work very well with people and love teaching. Not everyone can do that. If you are an art major, you know how to draw, you know the history of art, and not everyone knows how to do that either. (I can not draw a stick figure to save my life). And if you're a doctor, you know a lot more about the medical field than most people.

But not everyone can be a doctor or a lawyer, and they do not need to be. Society needs to stop looking down on people for the path they chose. And no one should have to justify their major. Every major is just as important as the other, and I've learned that the hard way. I used to be a neuroscience major, and I heard what some people said about the "dumber" majors. Some people are just skilled at different things, and I do better and have a passion for writing, and if that's gonna land me a newspaper job all my life, so be it. Because you're going to read that newspaper. You're going to watch that news channel. Without people like me, you wouldn't be able to read about news or see it on TV. You wouldn't be up to date with what is going on. (Who do you think goes to dig for all that information and get interviews and make that story super interesting?) And if you choose to be a doctor or lawyer, then kudos to you! Be proud and make that money, and be good at what you do, but don't look down on others because they are not you.

So please, do not respond to someone with "oh" when they tell you what their major is. I should be able to feel proud when I tell people about my major, because I love what I do, and that should be all that matters.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
